When we got Jacob from the Blue Cross 8 weeks ago his detailed history showed that he was treated with Xenex Spot-on every 4 weeks.

Nibbles, our original pig, has always been bathed using special shampoo for small pets.

We thought it would be a good idea to keep Jacobs treatment the same and start using it on Nibbles as well.

We used it first on 1-Jan 09 on both pigs and monitored them for a couple of hours, neither showed any discomfort or changed behaviour.

Last night we treated them with Xenex, the same dose as before, and monitored them until bedtime, all was well.

This morning, Jacob was his ususal self but Nibbles appeared to be on caffeine rush, running around at high speed, wide eyed , very jumpy.

Needless to say we skipped breakfast and bathed Nibbles, we used plenty of water asnd baby soap, after her bath she settled down and ate cucumber while we dried her with towels.

She now appears fine, we couldn't see any soreness on her skin, we will be keeping a very close watch on her.

She definitely didn't have any convulsions or tremors, the Xenex packet gives detailed possible reactions and remedies, just the super caffeinated hyper activity.

Has anyone else ever had similar symptoms? We think it was most likely the Xenex because when she stopped for a moment she would shake herself as if trying to get something off her fur.

Thanks in advance, the Grindrods

Not sure, but we have pigs that do this here, they run around their cage like to get rid of energy or to have some exercise. It could be a reaction, to the medication.

To be honest I wouldn't continually bath guinea pigs it weakens them. Baby soap shouldn't be used as it contains chemicals, there are special shampoos just for guineas at Gorgeous Guineas website. There is no need to use spot on if there is no problem with mites.

I wondered about that! But, she was sensitive to being touched so we bathed her just in case it was the Xenex.

Baby soap was the mildest soap we had as we didn't want to use the small pet shampoo as it also contains some anti flea chemicals. The Xenex is oily so I thought some kind of soap was necessary to remove it successfully.
