Just as the title really.

My piggies are having guinea pig nuggets from pets at home and was advised to keep them on this as it has everything they need in them and stops them from selective feeding. Me being me I refuse to be told what brand to buy as I think they are just after my money!

Any way I have found a good pet store in my local town and will be shopping there. They do stock quite a few different guinea pig foods but I hadn't a clue what to get.

Am I right sticking with the pellets too?

Any advice and/or opinions would be great.

Thank you muchly :)

Re: Read all the reviews but what do you think is the crem-de-la-crem of piggy f

aww sometimes it is more the individual taste of the piggies more.

We are able to get a 20kg sack (Bestpets now), which I mix in P@H nuggets - more so because Ton and Guin love them :)

So maybe if the boys are happily munching on the P@H nuggets i'm best off leaving them. Are the P@H nuggets a decent quality. I saw Tesco Value guinea food and it sent a shiver down my spine. probably nothing wrong with them but I just think nah, there must be a reason why they are cheap. What are yor thoughts on P@H own brand nuggets?

I put my sows onto burgess super guinea muslie when I first got them both. Then a few weeks later brought burgess excell pellets and slowly changed them over. When I got Rimmer he had been on tescoe purple bag of thier guinea food so I got him this and after a couple of weeks slowly changed him over to excell too. This was to avoid the selective feeding. Now I have been reading about wagg optimum pellets and I am keen to try my piggies on this but cannot find a supermarket or petshop that stock it. Wagg website states asda sell it well the 3 here only stock the rabbit one. I could buy it online but I only have three piggies and a 10kg sack would go off before they got down it.

To me, they are good :) 2 of my lot liking them loads! So I have nothing to worry about. Although they do have them mixed in so are getting all nutrients whatever they decide to eat :)

Supa Guinea Excel is identical to P@H nuggets if you don't want to shop there for your food.

I still prefer Oxbow Cavy Cuisine over everything else I've tried (in 15 years that's been Gerty, Tesco's own brand mix, Pets at Home mix, Pets at home nuggests, Supa Excel, Wagg Crunch and Science selective).

I have had the best success with Oxbow cavy cuisine and Wagg optimum pellets O0

Ive got all 7 of mine on to supreme science selective guinea pig, they were on gerty for a few years, then i had a guinea pig who had problems with her teeth and though maybe a pellet would work the teeth more so i moved them on to this, i tried burgess excell too but after having the science selective they wouldnt eat it..so i stuck to the science selective for everybody.

well mine eat pets at home nuggets and the exal pallets mixed in with gerty but tryingto get off gerty on to museli tho

Mine eat Vitakraft Vita Special Regular, which is pellets, I think it is a very good way to stop selective eating. Took them about ... half an hour to get used to them, they love them and go wild when I start rattling the box their food comes in, its really fun to see :)

Tried some Gerty Guinea the other day when I had run out and the new delivery hadnt arrived yet, and they didnt even touch it. Once the delivery of my normal piggy food arrived, I mixed it in with the Gerty Guinea (must not waste things ;)) and they just picked the vitakraft out of the food, leaving the Gerty... *sigh* Will be sticking with that then, I suppose :)

Mine have a piggy muesli which they all seem to love.

We use Guinea Pig Excel for several reasons:

1) it's pellets so avoids selective feeding
2) it's widely available so if we have to shop at a different store we are likely to get the same food
3) the piggies go mad over it!

I sprinkle a bit of piggie museli on top as well just to add a bit of interest, and they eat the whole lot, but if there's no museli they aren't bothered in the least - they just want the Excel!

I have been having a food problem since xmas. I had them on Burgess Excel pellets which was fine. The Swamp Pigs weren't keen but better than having just straw to eat!
Then I ran out of Excel & got so great stuff from the local pet shop which is FAB its a mix with real slices of carrot in it - no reconstituted rubbish, and the pigs ate every tiny bit of the stuff. It is sold at £1.20 / kilo. But I realised that I was the only person buying it & it is stored in big open bin type things & I got a bit concerned that I was buying stale food. So I noticed that where I get my megazorb from they had started to stock Allen & Page non GM Guinea Pig mix with 'real' carrot pieces in. It is £9.40 for a 40kilo sack. I have heard of a few people using this so thought I'd give it a go. Now the 'real' carrot pieces are not very carrot looking to me (ccompared to the other stuff) and it seems a bit rich. So I have mixed it with some redi grass and it has done the trick. The piggies eat all of it with the exception of a few rolled oats. I would love to get the other stuff - called Hedgerow carrot - by the sack but they only supply to the pet trade. I could even pick it up as they are based in Grantham which I go through to get to my folks. The pet shop will sell it to me for £14 / 20k sack. But still seems a bit steep considering the amount I get through..........ramble over!

Hi,
My piggies have p@h pellets and they eat them with no problems, but I do give them a guinea pig museli once or twice a week as a treat,They enjoy the change, but they do leave the bits they don't like, so I feel that nuggets are best as they get all the nutrition they need from them.

Like Gertie guinea pig, Gloria guinea pig is also packed full of artificial colourings that are bad for their health.

wouldnt that give them belly aches having nuggest all week then museil a few days then back to nuggest again?

all of mine are happily settled on wagg in the red sacks they have had it for years my pet food supplkier gets it in and keeps it for my fortnightly 2 sacks,

no they are fine with their treat once or twice a week , No problems at all.

Stick to the pellets. They are better than muesli. The best guinea pig food is cavy cuisine from what people have told me but i think it's quite expensive and you might have to order it off the internet.

We love Wagg Guinea pig Crunch. Have tried so many foods but the piggys definately prefer the wagg. Plus it is readily available... even supermarkets have it! Ideal really.
