i thought I'd give my piggies a treat, & get them some readi grass. I know it was a while ago, but I remember it being grass. OH bought some today & it very sharp & rough. I'd be frightened it would give them hay poke. Is my memory terrible or did the OH pick up the wrong stuff.
 
Shouldn't be that sharp tone honest with you.

There's 3 different types of readigrass - standard., oat and Timothy . Maybe yours is a different one to the one you got before?
 
I used to buy it quite a bit without too much issue, then I bought a bag and it had lots of little shards and sharp splintery bits in it, got stuck in my hand, hand swelled up...stopped buying it after that which is a shame because the piggies loved it! If I ever bought it again id stick it in a bowl, ours have shallow tapas bowls so they cant shove their faces into them. The oat one they do seems to be less sharp but ive not bought that in ages either..I think they do a few types now. I did get some samples of it from the hay experts and didn't have the shard issue though so could just be the odd, infrequent bad batch.
 
My readigrass is beautifully silky soft, it’s just standard stuff. Maybe a bad batch?
 
ive a 15kg bale and ikg bag of oat readigrass and it is lovely.maybe a bad batch. take it back you should get a refund !
 
I use the normal readigrass from 'Friendly farms'. They are 15kg bags and are always lovely and soft :)
 
This is the one I use (but I get it cheaper at the local horse feed store)

Mine is called Friendly Readigrass in a green bag. Seems ok but always so much chaff at the bottom! Not had any shards though.

Hi I have two beautiful boars approx 6 -7 months old and have had them approx 3 weeks now. The previous owner mentioned that they have only ever eaten redi grass instead of pellets and fresh veg and hay daily. I have been keeping their bowl of readygrass constantly topped up and they seem to graze on this when ever they fancy it. The veg is given twice daily and this is eaten up quickly. Am I over feeding them with the readigrass. I have recently read posts saying this should be a treat and not daily food. Should I swap the daily readi grass for pellets. The lady that I purchased the guineas from said she only gave natural food stuff hence readi grass. Would appreciate any advice as I don't want to make my beautiful boys Ill by over feeding them . Thank you

My pigs get readigrass a few times a week but definitely not every day. I would certainly be trying to get your little ones onto proper hay and a small amount of pellets as well as a daily portion of veggies. Hay should make up 80% of their diet so it should always be available for them to eat. Hope this helps :)
 
Ahh thank you. They have lots & lots of fresh Timothy hay daily. They use this to sleep on as well as eat. I'm wondering if they have perhaps been eating the ready grass more so than the hay because it's always been available? I will definitely use this more sparingly now and buy some pellets to put in their feed bowls. Hole I havnt caused them any harm by giving readygrass daily. Like I mentioned earlier the breeder has only ever fed them readygrass. Would you suggest stopping the grass gradually over a period of time or just going straight over to pellets. The Timothy hay is always piled high 24/7. Sorry for all the questions!

Sorry Flutterby but can you advise me on the best pellets to buy. I have a pets at home store near by that I can go to tomorrow.

There isn't really a 'best' pellet, it's more what you can afford, what your pigs needs are and what your pigs like. If you are going to pets at home they have a good selection of food. I would be looking at the science selective in there, it's a good quality pellet.
