Hi folks, the Sanctuary where we got 3 piggies from had a bowl of readigrass for them as well as fresh Veg and hay. They said it was readigrass for horses. I presume this is ok as I've seen it somewhere here on the forum. Please could you tell me if this is used in lieu of hay /fresh veggie's etc, is it beneficial? How much would you feed?
Thanks

No definitely not used instead of hay, they should have unlimited hay all the time. It's a supplement, I give mine as a treat, a small bowl once or twice a week as it is high in calcium. Some people feed it a lot more regularly without any issues but as I have a pig who has had a few bladder issues I feed with caution. I haven't seen readigrass for horses, mine had a picture of piggies and rabbits on the front so I don't know if this is in any way different.

Readigrass is no replacement for hay; it is much too rich and can lead to overweight; some members have also reported that it can impact negatively on guinea pigs with bladder problems.

Please use it as an occasional treat and rather give it in pinches than in bowlfuls. But it is the same readigrass that is sold at a much higher price in smaller bags for guinea pigs and other rodents.

I have the readigrass for horses, it came in a 15kg bale, the only difference for the rabbit one is the size. I ordered 15kg as it was only £16 from pet planet and much cheaper than buying 1.5 kg bales all the time, though it is literally going to take me years until they eat it all as I only use 4 handfuls a week (2 per hutch).
