Hello people

i hvae started my piggies on readigrass today, and i am going to look at keeping them on it due to davids unknown sneezing and runny nose. I like the look of this readigrass, its not dusty and its not spikey or pokey.

i am just giving them one tray at the top of their cc cage and will top it up twice a day because a lot of the hay i was using seemed to get wasted with poo and weeing on it. I am hoping they get used to this as they normally have a tray on the bottom and top. ill see how they get on.

What do people think of readigrass?

Also is readigrass suitable for the pigs to have instead of hay? i ahve tried oxbow hay but david is very sneezy x

Hey my piggies love readi grass I usually mix both hay and grass together in the lads tray and when i pack some loo roll tubes i mix hay and readigrass together and they love it getting it out the tube and eating it:))
I'm not sure about only readi grass without hay but maybe mixing it will help david
Good luck :)

I *think* Vedra only uses grass not hay. I have heard of it.

I think they hay is important as the long strands help them grind down their teeth, but maybe you could get some of those wicker balls, my lot chew them all the time and that may help with the teeth?

Laura knows much more about this than me though so may be worth asking her?

Or try dust free hay? I have a bale here of the stalky stuff that I don't mind sending you to try if you want to pay postage?

Mine use readigrass and seem to love it, but they do get a mix of hays and orchard grass on top too for variety. Not sure if readigrass on its own would be okay or not but I will be interested in the replies.

It's probably best to switch them over slowly, readigrass is a bit richer than hay. Also, you will probably find that it does produce a bit of dust; it doesn't look like it to start with because it all falls to the bottom of the bag. But readigrass is very brittle, so it does produce a certain amount of dust once it is in the cage and the pigs are tromping on it. The fact that it falls to the ground probably makes it less of a problem, unless something disturbs it.

i think iv slipped up today as iv just given them readigrass on its own allday iv put some hay in for them tonight and ill do the gradual transition and hopefully be able to alternate with the dust free hay.

is the oxbow not dust free iv got some of that?x x

You know I don't know if Oxbow is dust free!

I am not using dust free any more - my lot liked the soft but not the stalky and it's stalky I have here. I'll PM you soon.

x

i just bought a giant bale of the stuff from a pet / horse shop a few miles away from me and it was only £11 such a bargain. I daren't open it now though as I have no idea how to store it :)) it is currently sat in my shed. I have a hay bale in there too but that is in a duvet cover, I don't think a duvet would work with readigrass as it is too bitty!
