hello does anyone here feed there guinea pigs readigrass instead of hay or as well as? ive never used it before but it is apparantly more nutritional than hay higher in fibre and dosent have the germs hay does you can get a super big bag pretty cheap too

Mine have a small handful every couple of days as it's high in calcium and rich. They have lots of hay daily.

this is the break down of readigrass according to their website but it dosent say like its that much per kilo etc Protein 12%
Oil 2%
Fibre 28%
Vitamin C
500mg/kg
Calcium Level 0.8%

i use both timothy hay and also readigrass that i purchase from friendship estates ltd in doncaster both my girls like the readigrass so do my rabbits i would recommend using this but also keep some hay in as well

i tend to give them hay one day then readigrass the day after i dont see it hurting feeding readigrass every day its personal choice really i know that when i give my girls the readigrass they make a right noise and come to the front of the hutch they eat it so fast you would think my girls had never being fed i will always have readigrass in as it smells out of this world when fresh from the bag and my cavys love it too

I also only give readigrass every few days because of the calcium content. I sprinkle a handful in the hay so that the pigs can forage for it.

Readigrass shouldn't be given as a hay replacement, it is far too high in calcium for them to be given unlimited amounts. It is really only suitable to give them as a treat, maybe a handful every couple of days.

Hay should be available 24/7 for your guineas to munch on.

I give a little bit in with their hay maybe once a week or so - I dunno about anyone else, but I find it smells incredibly sweet - like freshly cooked cake!

I used to give it as a treat once every 1-2 weeks but when I went to get my last lot about a month ago they said they'd not got it in for me because it had almost doubled in price.

Be careful when you say 'personal choice' as many of us have seen the effect too much calcium has on piggies. It can cause bladder stones, which is agonising for them and very often fatal. This is why people are VERY careful with the quantities of calcium reach treats, I would seriously recommend rethinking the quanities of Readygrass you give to them. They probably love you for it, but it will be so much better for them long term. :)

Here's some useful reading about it.
