reading temperatures?

if anyone could give me a little advice please on how to work out the temperature of my girls new room i would be extremely grateful! i have 3 thermometers set up, one on the ground, one on top of the hutch and one on a shelf, obviously all reading different temperature!

they have been staying in a house that sits at 17.5 degrees so i wanted to mimic that here, would my best bet be taking the reading from the lowest to the ground? really struggling to work out what the room temp actually is in there!

The best and recommended reading to go by is in the middle of a room - around 5 feet off the floor so go by the one on top of the hutch.
Ground is always going to be colder and ceiling is always going to be hotter.
I would remove the floor and shelf thermometers and just use the one on the hutch

I used to have one thermometer attached to the wire door of the hutch and one in the shed - I did that so I could tell whether the hutch itself was coming up warmer once the hutch covers were on when compared to the shed air

perfect! thank you so much! we don’t have covers on this hutch as it was being kept inside with the rad on, hope this isn’t a problem! maybe i can look at diy options? what sort of thermometer did you use to attach to the cage?

I only have a normal thermometer - popped it on with a cable tie.

You won’t need that though if you aren’t using hutch covers as the temperature your piggies are exposed to will be the same as in the whole room. You’ll just have to make sure the radiator is keeping it at a consistent temperature

that makes sense! ideally i would like to get it to around 18/19 degrees but I'm worried with the floor reading lower it’ll be too cold! main reason being its such a small room and it just seems really warm haha!

do you think dropping it slightly could cause issues, should i just leave it at what its at?

Their comfort range is between 18 and 22 degrees. Ideally you want them above 15 but below 25. So every one of those readings is absolutely fine and if this was my shed I would not be giving it any thought. I would only have one thermometer in there though - none of those are ever going to read the same and you’re going to drive yourself mad over it.

As long as my shed is above 10 degrees in winter and below 25 at any other time then i don’t worry about it

Remember, they cope better being cooler rather than being too hot but you don’t want to expose them to a sudden change of more than 5 degrees.

thanks so much! your right having multiple set up is driving me mad, i just want it to be perfect! ill have a little play around to discover the best temp set up in here, hopefully get that done today then i wont need to worry! as long as the top of the hutch isn’t too high for what the girls will actually be feeling

Please don’t worry or overthink this. If they were my pigs, none of those temperatures would worry me and I wouldn’t be doing anything to adjust the temperature in there at this point. (My shed is currently 14 degrees - both boys are out and about playing as normal, I’m not doing anything extra for warmth).
If they aren’t showing signs of being too hot, then they aren’t too hot.
