baby piggie

Hi there, i had my piggie out tonight and noticed that he wasnt his usual self. His nose is a bit stuffy and his breathing is a bit raspy, he isnt really eating that much and also there seems to be discharge from his eyes, had a look at his nostrils and there was gunk up them. He is about 4 years old. I'm really worried about him, anybody have any ideas? :(

Could be a URI especially if he isn't feeling like eating and isn't himself. I;d take him the vets and get him checked over. Hope he gets sorted soon x

Septrin is what you guys use isn't it? or Zithromax :) you need to get the zith from vets, but you can buy the baby septrin from pharmacy.
We'll have our paws crossed for your little Truffles xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks for your replys. Its 3.55 and i cant sleep - really worried about truffles, I'm going to phone the vet and see if i can get him an appointment. Will let you know how i get on. :)

Hayfever is possible BUT with cases as "severe" as this - and in any case, actually - it is important to rule out an infection prior to assuming an allergy. However given that he is not his usual self, I would be inclined to suspect infection first.

Baytril is the most common antibiotic, but Septrin and Zithromax can also be given. If the vet prescribes Baytril, be sure it is at the correct dose of 0.4ml twice daily. A dose less than that, for an adult pig, is generally not as effective as it needs to be.

Just back from the vets, they have kept him in :(. The vet suspects a respiratory infection. So they are keeping him in and keeping an eye on him. I have to phone later to see how he is doing. They are going to give him some fluid and syringe feed.

Best wishes to Truffles

Truffles is still at the vets - was kept in overnight and is doing a bit better now but he's still got discharge coming from his nose and eyes. He is eating a bit now and has to stay in tonight again, have to phone the vets tomorrow morning to see how he is. I am missing him so much - i keep expecting to see him in his cage. :(

Do you know what the vets are doing for him other than feeding and giving fluids?

Truffles still at vets, they have been giving him antibiotics, they said his chest sounds a bit clearer but she said he isnt out of the woods yet. I have to phone back today and she said that if they thought he was a bit better i could take him home and i could continue with his medication at home. I was told to call at about 12.00. :(

Any more news? Hope he's okay, you must be missing having him at home!

Well i got Truffles home, he has got quite a bit of medication. Have been syringe feeding him some baby food and tempting him with some kale and romaine lettuce. Have been giving him water with a syringe too. He hasnt been eating much hay - have offered him all the hay he likes but he isnt interested. His nose is still a bit stuffy but his eyes arent as weepy anymore. There is something else bothering me though - when he tries to walk he kind of drags himself about - do you think this is because he is just weak? or could it be something more serious? :(

anybody have any idea? He still seems to be draging himself. He has an appointment on monday.

Erm sounds like he's weak to me, but i'm not positive. is he on metacam? Or has he been sedated for something? x

He is on 0.16mls of zantac syrup 0.62mls of metoclopramide, 0.5mls of baytril.
He also has to get a pinch of bisolvon powder in a bit of water. His chest is still rattles when he breathes. :(

Has there been no improvement in his breathing/symptoms since he first fell ill? Hayfever is a distinct possiblity when there has not been an improvement when treated for respiratory ailments, although at this stage it is rather difficult to say without seeing the pig. It may be worth seeking a second opinion from another vet, if you can find one who is more highly recommended for piggies.

I do wonder why metaclopromide was given, I've only heard of it in cases of bloat or stasis - maybe the vet was concerned that he wasn't eating enough? I believe the Zantac (ranitidine) is also used for similar gastric trouble.

Is the Baytril 0.5ml once a day? If the problem is a respiratory infection, a dose of 0.4ml twice a day is likely to be more effective, or another antibiotic such as Septrin or Zithromax. This is all stuff your vet would have to discuss with you, of course.

He is on all of them twice a day. He still isnt right - he's not eating or drinking on his own, not eating his hay or food and he isnt pooing properly. He cant seem to walk right either - hes just dragging himself and not standing on his paws. After almost a week of medication he isnt any better. He isnt the way he used to be, what i dont want is for him to be in pain, he just isnt himself. What does anyone else think? I have the vets tommorow.

It has been extremely warm too. I sometimes think piggies have same trouble as us, in hot weather. Lots of hugs and thoughts going to Truffles.
xx

I'm on my way to the vets soon, truffles isnt any better at all, still not eating, not drinking, not eating hay or fresh veg. He has stopped drinking, and he cant walk properly. I cant bear to see him like this :(

Dragging himself along, unable to stand properly, can both be signs of heart problems. Fluid on the lungs is another symptom associated with heart failure.

Weakness in back legs can be sign of a Vitamin E deficiency.

Hay-fever is more common than respiratory infections.
I have just tried to pm you but no chance!

I have just cam back from the vets. The vet decided that Truffles was very unwell and he hadnt responded to any medication. She said that the respiratory problem could have been a secondary problem and the kindest thing was to put him to sleep.:( I cried my eyes out in the vets, we have brought him home to bury him in the garden. I'm away to lie down for a bit as my head is really sore from crying.

Sleep well my little guy - go and find smudge at rainbow bridge.
