Well recently we have had this new cat around that likes to sit by our fishpond. A big tabby cat that skulks over the fence. Our dog tries to bark at him and scare him away but he doesn't take any notice.
We had some really nice fish in our pond, one that was nearly going for 10 years, a big bright orange fella, and we had some shebumkins that were nearly just as old and mum had recently bought 3 koi karp babies, all really pretty like black and orange, gold and silver and some cute little orange minnow type things. In total we had about 10. Well mum loves her pond and her fish and she always loves the sound of running water but when I was out with the rabbit today I noticed there was one of the little orange minnows all disfigured and swimming like his spine had been bent :( I tried to see what was up with him and noticed we seemed to only have 2 orange minows and one white/silver looking fish swimming around the bottom. Nearly all our lovely fish are gone within a matter of a few days :( I have just put up a net that we had to buy and told mum how many fish we had left and she got really sad that all of her fish have gone. I am really hating on this cat right now. We have never had a problem with any of the other cats around and now mum is all sad. She loves her pond. I might see if I can buy her some nice fish for Christmas, that might make her feel better. Poor fishies :0

Aw, poor fishies :( Hope the net does the trick and no more get hurt x

Water pistols are a good way to shoo cats away though :) They taught our cat not to go behind the TV or up the Christmas tree. We only have to shake it now and he freezes doing whatever he was doing then legs it upstairs! If you spot the cat in the garden, a squirt should get rid of him and hopefully, he'll start to associate your garden with getting wet and keep clear

Yes water chucked at it should do the trick....we have 4 dogs so dont get pestered with cats..

Aww poor Fisheys, naughty kitty :(

Lovely idea to get your mum fish for Christmas but please remember that you shouldn't introduce new fish to a pond during cold weather, they do not do well, best to wait till Spring when it warms up a bit x

as said above don't introduce new fish until the spring time.

I would get a water gun and squirt it each time you see it at the pond

Oh great idea, I think we have a water gun from when our dog was a puppy. Ill keep it by the back door :)

Yeah I thought it might be a bad idea to put fish into a pond in the middle of winter, it occurred to me just after I posted mallethead haha

The disfigured fish is be able to swim around but he seems to have a bit more trouble then he would normally, poor fish :( He was a lucky survivor I suppose. It is quite sad, a couple of the fish we had for so long. They went through the pond being horribly frozen over a couple of times, having it break and nearly draining all the water, moving house and living in a paddling pool and they still survived. But what gets them is some horrible fat cat :(

Bah! We have a pair of blackbirds that come to our garden every year to have their babies and the chicks like to sun themselves on our shed roofs and nasty cats (I know its their nature blah blah) always try to sneak up and eat them.

The only problem we have with our pond is Heron's! You look out the window and there's a great big bird in the garden! Have you thought about getting some netting to cover the pond?

Yeah we just had to buy some and I spent all morning trying to set it up properly :/ We don't have trouble with any other cats because our dog normally keeps them out. But not this one :/

cats can be pesky at times, cant * try lemon juice around the area, they are supposed to hate the smell, or would it harm the fish?

I've had problems with cats, we have a cat but my mums precious about her rose bushes, best advise is use orange peel, cats hate it, put it around your garden and they won't come in :)

Oh how sad and tragic, especially when they have lived that long. I had a white veil-tailed goldfish once that I had to re-home because my other goldfish kept trying to eat him. He was put in a garden pond similar to what you have described. Alas, his fate was also similar to what you have described. Ponds should always have a screen on the top flat to the water around the edge, especially if the fish have learned to come to the edge to be fed. They will rise to anything, and that's how the cats get them. Easy pickings. A screen fence far enough out around the edge (maybe 18 inches) and far enough down under the surface (maybe 4 inches) will keep the cats and other animals from reaching out far or stepping into the water and will keep the fish from coming completely to the edge.
I am so sorry for the fishies.

Thankyou :( it is very sad. The net we have put over the pond seems to be doing alright from what I can tell, haven't seen the cat around so maybe he has given up. Poor fishies been through so much :(
