Hi there, we’ve taken on 2 foster pigs and they came from a cage of 15 in a very dirty condition. They are really smelly, well not them as such but more their poo and wee. Their poos are really big and long compared to my own piggies and I’m wondering if this is because of their poor diet. They love all their food, pellets, hay and greens and eat like its their last meal. I’ve had them 2 weeks now and haven’t been able to handle them but they are now taking greens from my hands. I’m having to clean them out every other day and take their poo out daily.
just wondering if their smell is because they are settling into a new diet and regular food.

Well done on fostering them... I have no advice as have no clue but all poo gets cleaned out 2 or 3 times a day as standard..

Boars, particularly when their environment has changed, can do a lot of scent marking and throwing out of their manly smells. So if they’ve had a vet check and there is no UTI then you have a classic case of male hormones!
the more you clean, the more they need to scent mark it to make it their own. It will calm down, but perhaps when you are tidying etc if you can leave some of their scent laden bedding etc in the cage it can remove the need for them to scent mark to such an extent.

I do leave some old bedding when I put their box back in but yes maybe it’s scent marking. It seems to have got a bit less just the last few days and they’ve been with us 2.5 weeks now and definitely happier. One is the loudest squeaker when I open the fridge that even my 2 have given up joining in as I think they feel there’s no point.

We’ve had boars arrive and stink out our house so badly we’ve nicknamed them Mr Stink or Mr Whiffy but it usually settles. It’s always like that when we’ve had a neutered boar / sow bonding, too.
Once they feel at home and secure their drive to waft their manly scent wanes. Or we become desensitised to it!
