Recommended Vets

hi everyone i am a new owner and unfortunately needed to use the vets. I followed the link here but that particular one was closed on Sunday so I went to another vetinary hospital.

I saw an out of hours vet and she sorted us out and told me to book an apt for this Saturday with the small animal vet at the practice. At the reception I asked if the two named vets she told me to book in with are specialist. She said they don't call them that but they do have extra certificates for small animals.

Sooo.. the dilemma is shall I just go there or swap vets to the one that is listed here?

How do I know if the other vet is better than this one etc.

It is up to you which vet you feel happy with.

Personally, I have a general vets locally that has internet access to a small animal specialist. I use them for run of the mill stuff. I use a local out-of-hours service for emergencies, but I also travel further afield to a specialist for some issues, as my local vets have not been able to deal with it properly. Finding the arrangement that you are most comfortable with is always very much a matter of trial and error. Things in the veterinary world are very much iin flux at the moment. Our vet locator is by no means exhaustive. There are far too many vets in this country for us to go round and check them all, considering we are already moderating this forum in our free time and rely on our members for recommendations and input; and that is by its very nature patchy.

Thank you. I didn't like the vet I saw mainly because of the way she was towards me as I was nervous of handling koko but i had only had her for a week so am still new and learning. Anyway she was only out of hours so will see what this other lady is like then decide from there. I may even ask a few questions about care and experience etc. In a round about way!

You want to have a vet that you feel comfortable and happy with; that is an important aspect. Trust is always a large part of a good relationship. Sometimes a general vet that is willing to research issues carefully is better than an expert who isn't open to new things. If you have the option trying out several vets within your reach, then by all means do that and see which one you feel happiest with.
