Recurring Cystitis

I have a two and half year old boar called Jericho, we adopted him in April to be a mate for Big E as his previous mate sadly became ill and was pts :( Now since around July Jericho has had "possible" cystitis twice, first time he was treated with Baytril for 10 days, it sort of seemed to clear it but then I noticed he was squeaking again and then noticed blood in his urine again, so he was taken to the local vet who said if he continued to keep having problems he would need a bladder xray, she gave him a medication that's like Septrin, forgotten the name of it yet again, again this seemed to help... but again I've noticed his squeaking when he's going to the toilet, but no blood.

Is there any reason for him to keep getting cystitis and could it be possible he has maybe sludge or stones in his bladder?

We're going to get him booked in today as he's going to have to go to the PDSA this time as I simply cannot afford the xray (they said between £50 and over £100 at the local vet). The PDSA diagnosed our last guinea with stones but they booked him in for six days later for the op.. which wasn't good enough as he was losing weight rapidly even though he was being hand fed... so I'm a little bit weary now.

Maybe @helen105281 will have an idea as to what's going on with him?
 
It's difficult to say really, is the PDSA going to xray or do an ultrasound? Interstitial cystitis is also a possibility which is inflammation of the bladder rather than an infection and can be affected by diet. I think the scan or xray needs to be done though to rule out stones or sludge, then hopefully you will have more of an idea of what is happening.
 
No idea yet @helen105281 we've not taken him to the PDSA yet but when he went to the local vets they just said something along the lines of "if he continues to have problems then he will need a bladder xray"

Ahh ok, then I think I will make notes again and get the to check for the "Interstitial cystitis" as well. Does he need to have an ultrasound to detect Interstitial cystitis?
 
Ok thank you Helen, I'll mention that as well. The PDSA should have ultrasound equipment shouldn't it? If not I'll have to ask the local vet how much it would cost there.
 
I would think so, maybe call them and ask so you are prepared? Think at my local vets it was about £60.
 
@helen105281 it does sound like they have they equipment in the PDSA surgeries. Lol It's a job advertisement but it says "Use the latest equipment. Our Pet hospitals, most of which are purpose built, use the latest equipment to be found in general practice (ECG, endoscopy, ultrasound, ASIF implants etc)."

The PDSA should have all the equpment and the teaching vets will have the expertize

Question , apart from batril what meds has he been on , there are meds that will help with going to the toilet
 
He has been on Sulfatrim which the vet said was pretty much the same as Septrin and also meloxicam but he finished that course the other week.

He can go to the toilet, he just seems to squeak when he's doing it, plus his weight is up and down.
 
@helen105281 Jericho is booked in for this afternoon, could have got him in early but my son is taking him and I can't be doing with listening to him moan, he's not a very good morning person lol.

I'm going to type a note out for the vet, hopefully my son will give the note this time.. otherwise he'll be getting a lecture lol.

Will update the post when I find out more (if I remember lol).
 
No stones or anything else, she , she's trying to say it could be a lack of vit C? She said that ultrasound wouldn't pick that cystitis up... so I'm not going to email Jessica and speak to her, if he's already had an xray then he obviously won't need that doing.
 
How do they know there is no stones? Did he have the xray? A scan picked up IC in my pig Amy, it was a few years ago but am sure that's what happened. She was scanned by the vet at the clinic that I used to volunteer at and I think if I recall correctly I was in the room while she was scanned. It can show thickening of the bladder wall. Ascorbic acid is vitamin c I think. I have not heard of vitamin c deficiency causing bladder issues, not saying that isn't the case but I think there needs to be more investigation. Sorry to be a party pooper.
 
Oh no I believe you Helen, not the vet lol. Yeap exactly Helen!

She said to my son "I'll take him in the back and scan him" but he didn't properly hear her as she always bloody waffles, when she came back she said "I've taken him for a scan and an xray" and said she couldn't see any bladder stones and then flapped on about vit c lol......

I'll PM what the other vet I spoke to said, it's one Jericho went to see the other week when she gave him Sulfatrim.
 
Ok that's fine. Am glad he was scanned and/or xrayed. Can you get a copy of the xray?
 
How would I go about doing that or should I ask the other vets he's been going to see if they could get it and look at it?
 
Hmm, I'll see what I can do. Either that or I'll email reception at the other vets and ask if they can get a copy, then just take Jericho in for another appointment with Jessica and see what she says. It's a shame I can't get him to Derby to see Ellie.
 
Ascorbic Acid is another name for vitamin C. I am sure I have read on another thread about a product called Cystease for use in inflamed bladder walls? I get the human equivalent to interstitial cystitis and use a product called D-Mannose powder which works amazingly well, but to my knowledge it has not been used in animals. All the best getting Jericho sorted out:) x
 
Don't worry @Trish B I'm well on the ball this time around, I've lost two guinea's this year one to bladder stones, so I'm being very weary now. I'm hoping to take him back to the other vet, I just couldn't afford the xrays there.
 
@helen105281 I asked The Vet if they are able to get Jericho's medical records from the PDSA, they said they could and have let me know they have done that so when Aidan takes Jericho in again Jessica should hopefully have his xray/scan or whatever the vet did.

Thanks for reminding me that vets can ask for medical info from another vet :)
