Hello, so I made a thread a while ago (about a month ago) when Acorn first got these scabs on her left shoulder. We took her to the vet who prescribed surolan. It cleared it up within 2 weeks but then came back soon after on her right shoulder and behind her right ear. We took her back to the vet who gave a one time mite treatment, one week antibiotic course and to continue the surolan, these scabs are just starting to clear up and then this morning I found another one on her back?! My dad pays the vet bills and is reluctant to pay much more since it keeps coming back. I’m not sure what it is anymore and the vets don’t seem to know either. Does anyone have any experience with this? I was sort of thinking fungal since her skin is flakey but it’s not going away.

Hi!

A full course of ivermectin against mange mites comprises of 3-4 treatments at the product specific interval (typically 10-14 days for a high dosed good quality product).
The first two courses kill any emerging mites and the last course (or two in a more severe attack) take care of any stragglers to prevent a comeback. A one-off treatment will not get on top of any mites; it will only temporarily knock them back.
In your case, I would recommend to opt for proper mites treatment with weight appropriate xeno-50 or xeno 450 spot-on treatment first before you consider anything else.

When treating for ringworm, did you just bathe the whole body or only the affected parts and did apply our fully hygiene measures with vet grade disinfectant deep cleans and high temperature washes? If you didn't do the hygiene, you can easily open the door for a re-infection from one of the thousands of tiny ringworm spores that are shed during an outbreak and that can stay live for up to 18 months.

Here is information on mange mite and ringworm treatment. By now, any infection/infestation has moved so they are no longer in typical places.

Thanks for all that info! I did read a thread from about three years ago with a similar situation and it mentioned mange mites which were something I’d never heard of before. Where would you recommend I go from here, another vet trip and mention these ideas? I’m almost out of the surolan so I would have to get some more from them anyway, I’ve been careful with the hygiene stuff when treating her - I wear gloves and wash my hands and disinfect her cage and I took out all the wooden things because I read they can harbour the spores. I clean the cage out every other day and wash the towel I hold her in when I treat her. If there is anything else I can do please let me know. I’ve been waiting for this to clear up because she is alone and I’m waiting to get her a companion plus quarantine time after she is better. Sorry for the long message I just want to help here

Also we only put surolan on the affected areas, I was wondering if there was something we could use to bath her.

PLEASE take the time to read the two links in my last post; also ask one of your parents to please read them. You will find all the necessary information in there; including vital hygiene measures to prevent re-infection.
