So I’ve had a rescued guinea pig for 2 days now (gumtree) I suspected he had something wrong with him as he had a thinning/bald patch on his rump. I have put him on my lap for the first time today with a towel for just 5 mins. Quite a few red bugs were crawling on the towel around him. Are these what you would called mange mites or lice? Thanks x

I have two cats also so I’m worrying even more about it.

They could have been on the towel already tho as I left the towel outside all day.. hmmm

Hi! Please have your boy vet checked for a correct diagnosis and good quality treatment.

Mites are invisible to the naked eye, and lice are generally pale/whiteish/yellowish - but they are the only visible species specific skin parasites that guinea pigs have.

It could be of course something else, but we can only guess - only a hands-on examination will give you the correct answer.

Please do not treat on spec with cheap broad spectrum shop products that are not strong enough to get on top.

What to check and look out for in new guinea pigs (vet checks, sexing, parasites&illness)
