So yesterday i had someone saying how they don't like guinea pigs and it's mainly due to their beady eyes lol so when i got one of mine out of her cage she oh especially red eyes. Then i'm seeing a few things on facebook that piggies with red eyes are often mis-understood and get overlooked for homes. Can anyone enlighten me as to why if this is true ?

Some people just think that red eyes are less attractive unfortunately, but I think red eyes are pretty - I might be biased though :D

Personally I love red eyes! But like kate-elizabeth, I could be biased. A few people do say that they don't like them because they look "evil" or transparent. They look about as evil as a daffodil!
It's very sad that piggies are overlooked because of something so tiny.

It's not something i have ever thought about, all my piggies have dark eyes until i rescued the last 6 and 3 of the babies have red eyes and i due find them rather pretty, I definitely don't have a preference to piggies.
I never realised people can be so picky :(

Guinea pigs with different coloured eyes- it really doesn't bother me. Doesn't mean they're less loving and friendly due to their eye colour!

Even when my brother first saw my boys he said 'oh don't red eyes mean they have a disease or something?' so there is definitely a stigma, it's a shame isn't it :(

Both my Boys have red eyes and it does not bother me, I have had hamsters with red eyes in the past and they have been just as loving as a black eyed hamster I have had

It is a shame as originally i was going to rehome the rescues but due to health issue etc i decided i had put too much care into them and have become attached. Just as well as 3 of the babies have red eyes. So at least they have a good loving home with me and my family :)

I don't mind what colour eyes they have, I had a piggie with red eyes and she was gorgeous :)

One of my boys has red eyes! They don't always look red, it depends on the lighting! As they are a dark red! But the red is definitely noticeable!

I love it, because when they don't look red, they look black! It's like he has two different eye colours!

My dad says this! Says they freak him out!
He reckons its something to do with an old film about animals with red eyes?
I personally think there rather pretty. :)

I have three red eyes... And they are such personalities! I don't see an issue with them and they shouldn't be judged by their eyes!

Meh, I don't care what color eyes mine have. I understand if people have a preference in color, but if they don't like them to false information, then I just find them ignorant.

It's similar to the black cat superstition, people associate red (or pink) eyes with evil, demonic creatures and so they find them creepy and strange (they are based on recessive genes so being a minority gives them another reason to be singled out as strange). Parents then pass the dislike onto children and the cycle continues.

People also think that pink/red eyes mean poor vision - I know this is true in rats and based on the principle that reduced eye pigment increases photosensitivity I would think the same would be true of guinea pigs.

My first ever piggies were pink-eyed Himalayans, I thought they were gorgeous then and still do now! But even then (going back 20 years now, eeek!) they were constantly overlooked just because of their eye colour :(
