Red Eyes...

Not that I've heard or read. It's just the pigment that is missing. Pearl does squint more in the sun but other than that I've not noticed anything that would mean she is less able to see than the dark eyed pigs. :)

thanks Louise! i was brought up to think that red eyed animals could see less and were nearly blind, i totally forgot about it til this morning! then i panicked! x

Hmm I don't think it makes any difference. People who breed for healthy animals often breed red eyed animals - if there was a problem then these responsible breeders wouldn't breed them.

I've had a couple of rabbits and piggies who have had red/pink eyes. They have never had problems with sight :)

Piggies can't see very well anyway but the pigment of the eyes does not usually influence quality of vision. I've had a few blind piggies over the years either forever or foster and most of them actually were dark eyed.

I think it's just a common misconception going back to when I was young we always assumed PEWs were albino and hence had such problems

Big Red has red eyes and we think he's blind in one eye - if you move your finger towards his left eye he reacts normally and pulls away but there's no reaction with his right eye at all.

thank you for your response! i just get a bit paranoid about my girlies. x

I have a few pinkies here too and some ruby eyed piggies too and it is easy to worry about them for sure :)

For some reason, I see Ruby as more delicate than my other three piggies! Not sure why. I do love them all the same. x

My Chester is a lilac rex with pink eyes and he is one of my biggest chunkiest pigs too!

I also have 2 pinkie babies at the moment and I already think that they will be huge strapping lads!

One thing I have noticed is that both my ruby-eyed pigs close their eyes a lot more, and do blink quite a lot. One is also deaf, she is the one who sleeps with her eyes tight shut. But both are the largest pigs in size by far.

I haven't ever had a problem with piggies that I have had with red or ruby eyes.

As far as I was aware it just went with their colourings. Joey was a lilac, gold and white Satin with red eyes.

Nigel's eyes are like little traffic lights. They are an amazing red.

Lily's eyes appear dark at first, but there is a garnet tinge to them. Very cool.

Those who know me well enough know that i love Pink/Red eyed piggys and would have a shed full if i could !

I have noticed that my own red eyed guinea pigs close their eyes if the sun is bright. I would guess that their eyes are more sensitive to bright lights because there's less or no pigmentation in red eyed animals.
