Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum, and relatively new to guinea pigs - we got our first 2 girls about a year ago, after nagging from our 2 boys. They are lovely! (The piggies, that is) - I hadn't realised before how friendly guinea pigs are

Anyway, they generally seem really fit & healthy, but just now I've noticed a red lump/bump on Rosie's eye. I've put a close up of her on my profile pic, so I hope it's clear enough for someone to see!

It definitely wasn't there this morning, so it's only developed today (we've all been out all day today, so I don't know whenabouts today it appeared).

Rosie doesn't seem bothered by it, she's running around and eating and drinking normally.

Obviously I will be ringing the vet first thing tomorrow, but in the meantime, does anyone know what this is?!?

Sorry, I cannot see it. Is it on the eyeball or on the surrounding eye?

Hi Wiebke, thanks for looking. I think if you click on the photo it comes up a bit bigger? Sorry, I couldn't figure out if I could post a photo onto my thread (Facebook-style).

But it's kind of like a soft/squishy looking red lump near the front corner of the eye, on the upper eye. Its not on the eyeball itself - initially I thought it was something stuck under the top eyelid, if you see know what I mean. I guess it's kind of protruding out from the upper eyelid.

There's no weeping or discharge from the eye.

I have a piggy with regular eye troubles and would recommend seeing a vet as soon as you can. Could be any number of things, so best take no chances. One of my piggies has regular eye drops and is otherwise fit and well too.
Glad you are enjoying your piggies. I adore mine.

Thanks VickiA - I shall certainly be on the phone as soon as our vet opens tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed that it is nothing too serious....

I love our piggies too - they are such little characters :-)

It could be pea eye but best to get it checked by a vet. Welcome to the forum.

Just a quick update, in case this happens to anyone else's guinea pig, and they are googling for some information (like I did!)

I took Rosie to the vet today, and they put some anaesthetic drops and some bright green dye in her eye and had a good look. Reckoned she'd probably scratched her eyelid somehow, and it had swollen and been pushed out round her eye.

The vet recommended giving her an anaesthetic and snipping it off, as they thought that it probably wouldn't right itself even with eye cream/drops.

So that's what we did, and Rosie is already back home and munching happily on hay. We've some eye drops to give her for the next 7 days.

So hopefully that's all sorted (and hopefully she won't make a habit of it...)
