Eliza has horrible reddish / orange urine and has done now for a few weeks. She has been on and off antibiotics and the urine itself doesn't have any blood in it. This is happening every day now and I am very worried about her.
It comes out of her clear but then changes to this colour. When it is wet and on the hay, it is awful. It isn't anything she has been eating either. Any idea why her urine is this colour as it's stressing me out :( It's the same colour that Connie's was but Eliza isn't lifting up her bottom or squeaking when she pee's xx

Is she eating beetroot as this can colour the wee.

Has she had a probiotic since having the antibiotics to try and get her good bacteria back up?

I don't know much about these things - those are the only 2 things i can think of. I expect someone will be along soon who is expert in this type of thing. I hope you get it sorted soon, it's not nice to be stressed about your piggies.

Okay I just read that it's nothing she ate - sorry - my mistake.

Can anyone tell me how you edit posts?

Claire, it sounds pretty normal to me. The fact that the urine is coming out clear and that she is not exhibiting other symptoms is a suggestion that there is nothing to worry about. Urine can and often does oxidise once it has been expelled from the body, and can turn a rusty colour as it dries. With some pigs it happens all the time, with others it's rare. Why there is a difference I don't know, though. Try not to worry, I know it's hard after Connie but there was a big difference in their symptoms.

Thank you Laura. It's just very scary especially when the wood shavings change colour :( Does it matter that the pee looks rusty before it dries?

In my experience, no. Lottie would often pee clear and just before it dried it turned a very rusty colour. She didn't do it all the time, but when she did it was a strong colour.

I'm not sure if she is doing it all the time as it is only the rusty ones that stand out. I have switched them both to bottled water and giving extra vitamin C just in case :) x

What is the difference between bottled water and tap water?

It is just an experiment that has been suggested to me off some people from here. Sometimes the water from our taps can be cloudy and not very nice. The last time I went to stay with my parents, I took the pigs with me and my parents live in a hard water area so it started from there.

Eliza isn't a big drinker either but she seems to prefer bottled to tap and drinks more of it. Don't ask me why but she's just a fussy piggy :)
