Hello.

I just wondered if anyone could tel me the possible causes of red/pink pee and it's not beetroot! :-)

My baby girl had that once. The vet will need to be sure of where it is coming from, if it's a female all openings back there are close together. When my little girl had she had a bladder infection and likely a few stones. A couple of days on Baytril cleared it right up for her, get to the vet ASAP, untreated infections can cause piggies to go downhill quick and sometimes the pain will cause them to stop eating. Make sure she's hydrated and fed and get to the vet. Good luck keep us posted!

It's a boy and hes had 3 and a half weeks n antibiotics and it hasn't made a difference that's why I'm wondering what other causes there are :-)

No other symptoms? Bloating? Signs of pain? Maybe he has a bladder stone stuck and it's causing damage. What does the vet say? Maybe you need a second opinion, I have certainly gone through vets to find someone to listen to me

Hi. Sorry you have the red wee worry - I know it well as do many others. Which antibiotic was your boy on? How is his weight doing? How old is he?
If the Abs have not made any in roads, I think I would be back to the vet and thinking of xrays to look for stones or sludge - could be bladder, kidney, urethra or ureter stones. Would also probably discuss blood test to see how the kidneys are functioning.
@helen105281 knows more than me about another option, intercitial cystitis which is worth considering but I am afraid, in boys in particular, I would want to rule out stones quite quickly.

What antibiotics has he been on? if it was Baytril your vet may want to consider Septrin as it does tend to be more effective on a UTI. Is he shouting at all when he pees?

I agree with Laura that an xray or scan should be the next step to rule out stones.

Interstitial Cystitis tends to be the diagnosis once everything else is ruled out and it is basically inflammation of the bladder. A Glucosamine supplement (vegan version) can really help but there are some similar veterinary products too called Cystease and Cystaid. Diet plays a part aswell and I can go through this with you if needed.

Thank you he's had a week of baytril and just over 2 weeks of Septrin he's booked in Thursday for an xray.

His weight is ok he's eating and makes no noise when peeing.

He still likes to rumble at the girls and apart from the colourful urine shows no signs anything is wrong.

It is positive that he isn't in pain. Hopefully will turn out to be a stubborn UTI.

hello,

he had his xrays yesterday, they also scanned him. he appears to have a small cluster of stones at the top of his spine near his tail. they tried a catheter to flush them back in to the bladder but it didn't work. his kidneys and everything else also seems normal. hes home now with metacam for a week and monitoring him.

The vets have suggested calling/referring him to a specialist.

He is still ok in himself although he had lost 100g since he last went (just over 2 weeks ago) he weighs 1080g.

I'm useless at the moment due to us having one of our guinea's pts yesterday but I hope you manage to get your guinea pig sorted out, we have a one with kidney and bladder stones sadly, although he is maintaining his weight.

not the name but I believe it was in Cambridgeshire.

Sorry that some stones were found but at least you know what to focus on now. Did they say where they thought the stones were ie it sounds like they thought they were not in bladder?
I hope you can go to specialists - the metacam will help with some of the pain / inflammation but the stones will still be there. Are they referring you or do you have to decide?

Just another thought - there is a forum member who is working with their vet to deal with kidney stones using fizzy water and a med that helps excretion of calcium but it is all experimental at this point . Just tagging @TAN who might have some ideas to share? Thanks

they are not in the kidneys or bladder, the vet is not sure where they are going by the xray.

I am monitoring him for a week and then taking him back to see how hes doing and decide from there.

OK - I am probably going to sound doomy (have recently lost a pggie from this kind of issue) but I would suspect that in a week he will be no better and could have lost more weight (given he lost 100g in 2 wks). I would just encourage you to see the other vet if your vet is not sure what you are tackling.

If the stones are near his 'tail' and not in the bladder, kidneys or ureters (the tube leading from the kidneys to the bladder), I strongly suspect they are stuck in his urethra (the tube leading from his bladder to his penis (exit to the outside) ). I completely agree with @lauraboara x

they did try flushing the stones using a catheter up the penis to try and put them back in the bladder but it didn't work.

Hi
My vet is an piggy specialist and a referrals specialist - I know of the procedure to blow the stones back into the bladder, as this is what we thought Bumble might have to have done if his stones that he managed to pass down his ureter got stuck when he tried to wee them out - but we didn't have to do this because they stubbornly just sat in his bladder and refused to move - with the fizzy water no more than 2ml 3 times a day as you don't want to cause bloat - agree this will need to be looked at asap - as to get them out surgically is quite an op -
Could you get your vet to send over the x-ray with a brief history to my vet - they should be able to do this easily - so she can give some advice? - my vet is a fab surgeon and has done several complicated ops on Bumble and is sorting out Smudge for @DorogonHinansho - my vet is Rachel Mowbray at Vale Vets in Dursley 01453 542092 - she works Monday and Wednesday at the practice, the rest of the time she is running the pet rehab centre at the vets - Dursley is about 2 hrs 50 mins from you - I would recommend her surgical skills without a doubt - she has spayed two of my sows, removed a stone from the tip of Bumbles penis bone, removed stones last week and done 2 ops for removal of cancerous lumps and one filing teeth - the prices are very good and an overnight stay in the vets is only about £19 - (for piggy - not for you ) - if you are willing to travel she can give you a rough estimate of costs - is piggy insured?

Thank you. Will try and see/speak to vet on monday. No he's not insured.
