Hi everyone,

My Guinea pig has been peeing red/pink urine on and off for about a month. I took her to the vet and they did an ultrasound and sampled her urine and there was no blood or stones, ruling out a UTI as well. The vet said their was some slight inflammation but she’s not concerned about it. She believes it is just how her body is reacting to something she is eating that is altering the pigment in her urine. I cut out most veggies other than romaine lettuce to see if that was what was causing the colour change, however it has happened again. I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or knows what it may be? And also, can excess vitamin C change urine colour?

Thanks in advance!

Also, in the images it may look spotted but that is just how it’s drying on the puppy pad!

Some red foods can stain urine, of course, that isn’t a concern If that is all it turned out to be. However, I would ask whether your piggy is experiencing any pain when urinating?

In answer to your Vit C question, as long as your guinea pig is on a balanced diet with no additional supplements then excess Vet C shouldn't be an issue anyway.
If she has seen a vet and they think it might just be inflammation then have you considered trying a course of glucosamine to sooth the bladder walls?

No pain! She doesn’t squeak or hunch and she’s acting like her normal self. It’s just quite scary to see and even though I’ve been to the vet I panic 😅

Maybe I will have to try that! Thank you! Do I get this from the vet or can I get it elsewhere?

I get mine from the vet without prescription under the name Cystease - it is a glucosamine product designed for cats, but seems to be well tolerate by guinea pigs. It is also easily available online in Europe.
There are lots of references to using it on the Forum.
I am not sure about where you are based though (Canada?).
