Hello,

I woke up yesterday morning to find one of my pigs had a red spot on his nose, smaller than 1p coin, the hair is missing and a red patch remains. It came up overnight. The night before I noticed there was a translucent hard patch on it (it looked the boat glue) so I ignored it. I took him to the local vet and they don't know, they've suggested a skin scrape which will look for bacteria not fungus. He's an old pig (5.5yrs) so his immune system could be low. I don't know if he's pulled hair off, it's bacterial, fungal or mites?

Thanks! IMG_20190704_070339.webp

Hi!

It rather looks like the boar glue (which has got its name for a good reason) has not fallen off but been ripped off, taking hair and some skin with it.

I would worry about a fungal skin infection only if the bald patch grew a white crust (exudate) or scales and continued to get larger in the next day or two.

That's his sleepy face! Thanks for the advice Wiebke, I'll give it a couple of days and see what happens.
