I've just done my night-time routine for my two guinea pigs, which are kept in separate cages, and noticed one of them had weed in his litter tray, and it looked orange/red, he's on anti-biotics at the moment, so we thought it might be that, but then I moved across to do the other pig and he had evidence that his wee had been red/orange too! I shall ring the vets in the morning, but if anybody reads this and knows what I might do overnight just in case then please help!

I would say this is a bladder infection. The vet will give your little one a course of antibiotics to treat it. You may like to give a probiotic along with it as it helps to line the tummy as they are very delicate.

Ok, thank you! one of them has been on antibiotics for a week now (3 days left of the course) for something unrelated, would this not kind of, fight other bacteria too?

Also, we were wondering whether to not give him his antibiotic tonight in case it was that (when we thought it was just the one), but I think I should give it to him as normal now it's both, it rules out that as being the reason right?

Just to check, have they been given any red foods lately ? (Tomato, red peppers, beetroot even carrot etc) because all three of mine have had pink wee yesterday as they had red veggies.

Hi! Have you giving him anything red foods? (apple, strawberries, raspberries.) Rusty's pee turned red when I gave her an apple, I peel the skin now of give my girlies green apples.

Usually when you have antibiotics you are not meant to just stop them as the whole course is needed to treat the problem. Maybe a different one is used for urinary infections. I am not sure. Sorry.

No red food, that's the first thing I though as my friend had a massive panic, which just turned out to be carrots!
they've been having celery, parsley and cucumber for the past 2/3 days which have never been a problem before.
I have just swapped their pellets to the pets at home ones (not their favourite, but it's only a small bag!) but that was a week ago that it changed...

Is the wee red as it comes out or is it turning red later? If it comes out red then trip to the vets but if turning red or orange latere then it is probably because of iron in the wee oxidising.

Wee can often turn orange/red on contact with the air as iron (II) in the wee from food becomes iron(III). If this is the case it's perfectly fine and normal and could explain why both are getting it as I assume both have the same diet.

To check you need to get a fresh sampl to see if comes out clear, sit piggie on white tile, feed watery veg and wait. If turning orangey red it may be this, if coming out red then vets is needed.

I have been to the vets, and he is pretty sure it's a urinary infection in both of them, which explains why the one who is on antibiotics had not had any more red wee this morning - the antibiotics had begun to clear it up fast, but the other one had.
Now i have to finish the last 3 days of the 10 day course with Lucian, and Winston has been put on antibiotics too... FOR THREE WEEKS! can this be right? the vet didn't actually tell me how long to give them for, but we asked at reception when we collected them and she said there was 3 weeks worth in there... me and my mum both sort of gasped "3 weeks?" but the nurse didn't seem to think it was strange...
Winston is a wriggle-bum and I'm not sure if he'll take a syringe very well... he bit me this morning when i just gave him a cuddle and drew blood, i'm pretty sure he was just looking for food as it was "veg time", but lucian, and previous pets have always done a test bite first... I might not come out of this with all 10 fingers!

Ah so it is a urine infection then. Poor babies. Usually they need to be on a course of antibiotics for two weeks to clear it up. I have not heard of three weeks. Why not call just to double check? I really hope they get well soon.

My girl recently had a UTI and I was only given 1 weeks worth of antibiotics, however I think it may be coming back so will have to book another appointment at the vets. Usually it is a 2 week course, but I suppose too much is better than too little (as in my case).

Three weeks isn't unusual and sometimes it's needed as some infections can be quite stubborn to clear.

Hope they get better soon

Well don't I feel foolish! I thought I ought to post this so that Winston doesn't start getting a bad reputation! He loves the antibiotics and seems a bit disappointed that he only gets a couple of licks of it! He'l take it through the bars (and try to take the syringe with it!) or if we get him out!
