One of my baby is now no more he passed yesterday due to unknown reasons. He started having fits, a day before that he stopped using his fore limbs. Deigo is now left alone, though engage with him a lot so that he doesn't feel lonely, he is playing well sleeping well and eating well too. But now I saw reddish brown urine and I am scared. What does it mean? Is it due to illness. He had beans this morning should I stop feeding that. What should I do. The vet here are not familiar with guinea pigs and they refuse to see. What can I do?

Hi Akanksha, I am having the same problem with my new 4 month old boy and am about to take him to the vets, so I will let you know the outcome later today. Mine loves green beans too!

thank you so much. I'll wait for the results hope everything goes fine and normal with both the babies

I have spoken with the vet and she said this can be normal for some pigs. As Bruno is only 4 months old and I’ve only had him for a week and a half, it could be how his urine is coloured. I have been told to keep an eye on him and if he should change ie stop eating or seem unwell, or the urine become tinged with bright red (as in fresh blood) I have to take him to the vets straight away. I’m sorry, this probably doesn’t help you, but if your boy is bright and his usual self (even though he’s lost his friend) then hopefully he will be okay. Maybe don’t give him beans and see if that helps? I have no idea if they can cause this but will be cutting them out of Bruno’s diet just to see.

My deigo is too 4 Months old. He seems normal right now eating well and playing. I will keep an eye if that happens again.thank you for keeping up

Sorry you lost your little piggy.

Is the urine coming out red/brown or turning that way?

When wee oxidises it can turn colour due to a substance within it.

Is there any sign of crying? Or hunching when weeing?

Please have a look whether they urine is clear when it leaves the body. Urine usually discolours more or less strongly when it oxidises and dries a rusty/orangey colour. The intensity depends on how watery the urine is - you see the same in humane urine.

If you are worried about blood in the urine: it doesn't mix with water and dries as little red dots in the middle or a urine patch or as a red ring (in a completely different colour to the rusty/orangey one of the pee puddle) if there is a real lot of it. You only need to see a vet if you notice blood in the urine.

It is normal to be extra jittery in the wake of losing a guinea pig unexpectedly.
