I was holding Red last night while watching television but ended up watching Red instead, he was so cute. I scratched behind his ears and around his neck, and below his jaw on the left side I felt a lump. I looked through the hair to see what it was, and I saw what looked identical to a tick, so I grasped it and pulled it off. On examination with magnifying reading glasses, it turned out not to be a tick but a tick-shaped scab (so maybe I shouldn't have pulled it, sorry Red). I inspected the area, and a bit of blood and fluid had drained from the wound and a small crater about 4 mm in diameter is there. It did not and does not appear to be infected or painful. I rinsed the wound with Betadine antibiotic solution, dried it, and then put (expensive!) veterinary triple antibiotic ointment on it.
This morning I looked at it, and it appears to be OK, no larger, still not infected. I cut the hair around it so that I can get a better look. There is no drainage. So I am wondering:
Could this be a bite injury inflicted by Salvatore at some time when I have had them together? That is what I am thinking. Or do guinea pigs get sores and abscesses commonly? I have searched the forum for some tips and information but maybe I am using the wrong search parameters as I haven't found anything except threads started by people whose animals had abscesses. (Speaking of which, one was posted today about "Henry", if you haven't looked at it could you go look at it now, maybe information on that piggie will help me?) If Sal and Red are biting each other, I'm definitely not housing them together.
I won't be able to call the vet until Monday.
