Hi, all,
It's just been one major disaster after another here (one minor). As you know, just before Christmas my friend died, and that kept me on the road for a bit. Since then, my MS has developed a new, painful symptom and I've had to do traveling to get that taken care of, and the drugs keep the pain away but also keep me from the computer as I can't stay awake. It even kept me from going to my aunt's 80th b-day party. Then my Tatiana dog developed limb pain so her surgical hardware (plate and screws) from an accident was removed, and that is when they could see that she had bone cancer causing the pain, not the hardware.

Her leg was amputated by removing it out of the hip socket. Now the cancer has spread to her lungs and she is dying; she is being treated through the university veterinary hospital, and that requires driving. We started chemo pills yesterday to shrink the tumors and allow her to breathe more comfortably; I pray it works. I know the cancer will kill her, and she has begun slight organ failure, but I don't want her to suffocate. She has stopped eating, but she is still enjoying life enough that I must spend intense time with her day and night to keep her from suffering. If I continue to force feed her, as I am doing now, at least she won't starve. It is not time for her to be PTS yet as when I ask "Do you want to go for a walk with me?" if she feels well enough she will, and we walk around the property and she sniffs and investigates and sometimes runs off for a swim in the pond.

The minor disaster is that I cannot afford Internet access for the house I bought, so when I am out there I can't log on.

I am writing all that to tell you that because of all your prior information to me, I knew what to do when Salvatore developed a problem, and I didn't have to log in here in desperation. He woke me up yesterday morning about 2 a.m. crying and fitting, and he had been scratching and had scratched a raw spot. Every time he would scratch the spot it caused him severe pain. Those of you who have treated GPs with mites know exactly what was going on with him. I bathed him (a goodly clump of hair fell out, too), plastered the bare areas with Vaseline and triple antibiotic ointment. I tried to bandage the raw area, but I was afraid the tape encircling his body would restrict his breathing, so I removed that and cut off the top of one of my socks to make an elastic vest for him with holes for his legs. This worked miraculously as he could not hurt himself by scratching. He also got a tiny drop of children's liquid Benadryl, .02 cc. once every 12 hours. I also removed the hay when I cleaned and sanitized the cage, as surely the hay was rubbing against his skin stimulating the itching, like a feather on your face will make your face itch. I replaced the hay with towels as I have no fleeces.

The vet who saw him previously when I brought him to my house was able to see him that same afternoon. Although she still could find no evidence of mites after examining hair follicles and skin scrapings, she decided that even with the assault to his immune system she would begin the ivermectin. I brought Redemption along in case she was giving injections, as if one needs it surely the other does. I don't keep them together but I do keep them beside each other. She gave me liquid and more graduated syringes to take home and administer 1 dose every week for 3 weeks, 0.5 cc for Sal and 0.6 cc for Red.

Here is Salvatore and his little "jacket":

I am so sorry about it all! What a rotten time you are having!

Sending my vibes to you, poor Tatiana and Sal!

So sorry to hear what an awful time of things you're going through. Salvatore looks so funny in his little sock outfit - super cute! Hope he makes a speedy recovery and that things start to get better for *! Healing wheeks from me and my piggies!

Good to see you back Pat, although a shame it's not under happier circumstances :(

You're one hell of a woman to be dealing with all this by yourself - you're an inspiration!

Hugs to all of you xx

Oh Pat I am so sorry to hear all you have been going through. How awful you are feeling so unwell and your poor dog has cancer. It all sounds such a lot to cope with. What a shame you do not have the internet so we cannot get regular updates from you. I hope Sal recovers soon. Take care of yourself you special woman.

Good to hear from you Pat!

What rotten luck you've been having! I hope Sal feels better soon and that your doggy enjoys what little or long life she has left xx

aww soryr to hear you haven't been having a great time of thigns Pat, and really sorry to hear about your dog, it's so hard to see them unwell and know that you may have to make the decision to PTS.

Lovely to hear from you tho, I hope Sal recovers quickly, this was my first experience of it too, Peanut was covered in scabs and squealed when I touched him. I had to take both him and Fuzzy for ivermectin injections once a fortnight for 4 weeks, Fuzzy never had an issue tho. Fingers crossed Reds ok too. The little sock jacket trick works wonders :))

Good to hear from you, wishing you all the best and a full and happy remainder of life for your Tatiana. Also hoping you manage to cope with it all.

The sock idea is great. Healing wheeks to all your animals (and you as well) from my crew.

So sorry to read this sad news, I hope your little dog enjoys everyday to the full , that your pain eases and that Sal is back to full health in no time!

Ps - nice to see you on the forum, just wish it was happier circumstances! x

Thank you all for your good wishes. The animal illnesses coming all at once are taking a toll as my own nerve condition and medication don't help things any. My big dog had a tumor removed on his foot, too, but that's over now, thank goodness.

Today was a good day. Tatiana went for a walk with me when I asked her; I went down to the creek and moved some rocks around to enlarge the channel so as to give her time to putter around. The neighbor cows (heifers, really) came to the fence to see us, so I walked us over there. They kept their distance from me, but they were very eager to see Tatiana. She was at the fence, but when the cows approached her, she was alarmed at how huge the animals are up close, so she backed off in a hurry and said, "Woof!" After a short while we went back to the house. Tatiana had a lovely afternoon nap. We had a visitor tonight, and Tatiana actually wagged her tail.

I gave the guinea pigs baths today, Sal's second this week. I combed out loose hairs from both of them. I trimmed nails, and made another sock shirt for Sal. Little monkey pig, he figured out how to get them off. I fed them lots and lots of fresh veg, green beans, celery, carrots, corn on the cob and in the husk (they like silks, husks, and kernels, and they leave the cob), and parsley. Nobody is scratching. I gave them toilet paper tube toys, and they are nibbling them down quickly. Amazingly, Sal's wound from scratching has nearly healed over. It was bloody red yesterday at the vet. Now it has skinned over, not a scab. They are having a wonderful time in their cage right now, each pig on his half.

It was so sweet to see Red poke his little nose through the bars to see what was wrong with Sal, and when they were back from the vet, Sal had his face up against the barrier and Red was "talking" into his ear. They are so cute.

Oh PAt, sorry to hear you are having such a rough time of things at the moment. Very sorry to hear about Tatiana, and I hope Sal recovers soon. Sending lots of vibes and love your way. x

What a rotten luck you have been having hope things start to go right again soon. I don't think you will need to do this now because it sounds as if Sal is over the worst, but you can put micropore tap on their nails too to stop them from scratching themselves raw. Has Red had to be treated too at all?

I hope things get better nice and quickly for you, I'm sorry to hear you've had such a rough time.

Genius idea with that sock though, little Salvatore looks smashing! <3
