i have just come back from uni tonight and noticed that my piggy schoffers had redish/orange pee. i found it on a white fleecey tunnel thing i have for her. i dont know how long its been going on for, my parents said they hadn't noticed it before. her other pees seem to be normal. also found some on her vulva.
shes been out on the grass for the past few weeks as its been nice and sunny - something that is very rare in wales! she has carrot and cucumber in the night, but not huge amounts or different to what shes had the past year - which makes me think its not the carrots making her pee a diff colour. shes eating well, drinking well and her behaviour has been normal - bad tempered and biting me!
i have read a previous thread by tattyruncy which sounds, and looks very much like what schoffers has. does anyone have any additional advice of what it is and why its happening
also when her pee dries, it does dry white and powdery - could this have something to do with it?

Hi there,
I wonder if it puts your mind at rest to have a urine sample tested :)
Sometimes it is the veg that discolours the urine and it always looks worse on white fleece/towels :) I was worried with my Bright Eyes cos she's not long got over a urine infection. Let us know how you get on :)

Urine infection?

Hi there,

I noticed red/orange pee from one of my piggies yesterday. Thought he'd cut his foot or something but couldnt see anything.

Took him to the vet today who gave his bladder a squeeze and sure enough his urine was full of blood!

Vet said its a urine infection and has given him some antibiotics to take twice a day. Said its not contagious so the other one shouldnt get it. I asked what causes it and he said just one of those things.

He did say that sometimes blood in their urine is caused by other things - kidney stones and stuff so I have to take him back in 10 days to make sure he is ok.

I'd take your pig to the vet and get her checked over. Hope she's ok :)

Urine can oxidise and dry a rusty colour, which can be totally normal. A urine test would confirm/rule out any blood in the urine if you are worried, but for now it's worth just keeping a close eye of Schoffers and monitoring her peeing and her behaviour.

ive kept her on a white towel for the past 2 days hoping that any red pee might show up but all pee is yellow, no brown stains (but the one on the fleece is brown, which is why i thought it was blood). fed her cucumber yesterday to make sure she was getting water. today ive seen her drinking, shes had some carrots and grass. she has eaten dry food too. she is squeeking everytime the fridge door opens, hoping for carrots!
her poo is a bit squishy-er than i remember, but she has been out on the grass most nights so maybe thats why.
i also weighed her today for the first time, on my mums kitchen scales - which she is not going to find out about hee hee :) shes 1kg exactly.
also bought some cranberry juice, but dont have a syringe, so i put it in a water bottle. she sniffed it and ran away!

shes quieter than i remember ( been at uni so havent seen her for a month or two) but thinking that might be due to her growing up and calming down ( shes 1 a few months)! she even sat and watched wimbledon with me for 30 mins with out biting me - its a miracle!

think i shall just watch and wait. if it happens again then i'll take a trip to the vets. theres an exotics vet in on mondays, but I'm on a horse placement for the next two weeks, so hopefully she'll be fine.
