Lily & Rose
Junior Guinea Pig
Just over a month ago we got a new guinea pig, Poppy. She is around 3 and half and was previously given a very poor diet. Her diet used to consist of hay, gone off pellets (Wagg muesli) and was occasionally given grapes, carrots and lettuce. I tried to introduce her to veggies slowly, starting off with just a bit of cucumber and pepper. She absolutely loved it and was thrilled that she was getting veggies twice a day. After a couple of days she also had coriander, lettuce and occasionally a cherry tomato.
It became more difficult when she started to live with my other pig, as I had to give her the same food and the same portion size as her. Poppy started to have a little bit of spring greens daily and celery most days, as well as the other veggies.
After two weeks, Poppy started to look uncomfortable when going to the toilet, and some of her poos were soft. I stopped giving her veggies for a few days and her symptoms improved. I gave her some coriander for a couple of days and she was fine. Then I tried red pepper as well as the coriander and some of her poos were soft the following day. She went without veggies for another day, then I went back to giving her just the coriander.
For the last couple of days I have added cucumber and a bit of lettuce, but she seems a bit uncomfortable going to the toilet again and there was a few squashed poos in the cage. It's not as bad as before, but I don't know what to do for her to get used to veggies. For the whole of last week I have had to take my other pig, Lily in the other room to give her veggies and I feel really bad for Poppy, as I think she can smell it on her when Lily comes back to the cage. Lily is also starting the IC diet and it's going to be difficult if Poppy can't eat the same food.
Does anyone have any advice on what I can do for Poppy? I was thinking of maybe getting her the Oxbow Digestion supplement, but I'm not sure how effective it is. Thank you.
