Senior Guinea Pig
Tomorrow is the first anniversary of the passing of one of my girls, Lottie. She was only the second pig I had lost, having lost my first pig only 9 months earlier. Sadly, 8 days after losing Lottie, I lost another of my girls, Tuppence.
Both had been ill. Lottie was an old girl who simply grew tired and her little body could not cope with her ailments any longer, she passed peacefully in her sleep in a cosy spot in the cage shortly after a long cuddle late on Boxing Day (by the time I settled her in the cage it was after midnight, so early on 27 December when she passed).

Tuppence had been struggling with dental problems for most of the 2008 and a suspected systemic fungal infection for around 3 months which meant she was a very low weight and despite huge syringe-feedings, often over 120ml per day, she just could not gain weight. By the time the problem was identified and treatment started, she came down with another illness which was too much for her.
She had been grieving for the one and only pig she ever connected with, Charlie - my first pig who died 9 months before her and Lottie. While Tuppy was not short of other piggie friends - I even adopted my dear Frankie to befriend her - she never connected with them and she would not assert herself as she usually would. She was normally an extremely feisty, independent pig. I truly believe that when Charlie died, he took Tuppy's special sparkle with him. She was never the same after his passing, and while she battled on through her illnesses her heart wasn't quite in it.
I suspect she had a heart condition due to various symptoms, but she was never diagnosed as her heart "sounded fine", which apparently cancelled out all her convincing symptoms! I remain sure that, had she been put on a trial of heart medication, she would have responded.
However, on 3 January, a week after Lottie's death, Tuppy came down with respiratory difficulties. She is the first pig I have fought 150% for and still lost. Syringe-feeding for endless weeks, trips to the vet at midnight and 5pm on the weekend she fell ill with that fatal respiratory infection, specifically asking the vet for a diuretic and subcutaneous fluids.
I told Tuppence she could leave me if she had to, and shortly after updating everyone on the forum after returning from the vets at 5pm on 4 January, I found she had passed away.

My heart feels sad that they are no longer here in body, but I am truly happy that my girls have been reunited with their most beloved man Charlie and I know they are still very much around in spirit.
