Hi,
My boy Pedro has a bit of food stuck and crusted onto his top lip and a bit between his top two teeth. Any idea how I can remove this. He doesn’t like it when I touch his mouth so no idea how to get rid of it as it is rock hard and really stuck on. It’s been on for a few days now. He’s still eating normally etc and it doesn’t seem to bother him. Should I try and soak it off or just leave it?

Hi

As long as it is not preventing him from eating, I would leave it. It will eventually come off on its own. As it's been there for several days already, it will be very dry and not easy to soak - and you will have to fight Pedro all the way.

I am now a bit concerned this might be cheilitis rather than just stuck food. In your experience does it look like it could be or is cheilitis always red? It’s exactly the colour of mashed up nuggets so I just thought it was that.

Hi

It still looks more like something stuck to the hairs to me but since we can only check from pictures and can only guess as much as you if you have any concerns, please see a vet this coming week during regular opening hours. It is not an emergency.

Cheilitis is the equivalent of bumblefoot for lips - germs get into the skin through tiny cracks. It is - like bumblefoot - punctual and not covering a larger area at the start.
