HelloI have 2 piggies and keep them underneath the open-plan stairs, they have a hutch and the area is carpeted and there are boxes with fleeces where they can sleep and hide, they are out all day as they don't step off the carpet onto the laminate flooring.(It's a guinea pig thing)When I come home I tidy there room up as we call it and then have them for an hour on our laps and then they go into the hutch at night what I was thinking of was removing the hutch and getting some more fleeces and boxes and so when they have had there cuddle time they would go back on the floor, does anyone think this would cause them any stress or unease as they would be out all of the time. We have no other pets and the size of the area is 7ft by 6ft so they would have plenty of room and nothing would disturb them and there is nothing that they can chew.Would appreciate any advice as I plan to do this at the weekend.

Only thing i can see is draughts? If they are directly on the fllor then draughts from under the skirting boards could be a problem? Myabe you could put a cage in there instead and leave it open to if they want to they can go in there at nigth and snuggle up?
Obviously i have no idea what your house is like but i cant keep mine directly on the floor because i do have draughts! So they are raised up just below the ghieght of the skirting boards...

your set up sounds great though! My understairs is full of animal things and xmas decorations so nothing can fit in there...:))

There aren't any draughts as the carpet goes about 6 inches up the wall as I didn't want them chewing the flooring and the skirting boards. Have brought some big and little boxes home and some tunnels . I think I am more excited about it all than what they will be.

I think it's a wonderful idea - a little piggy paradise.

I know they'll love it and all that space is just brilliant. You'll have to post some pics when its all done. Well done for thinking about it :)

I would agree, sounds great :) The only worry I would have had was draughts, but you have eliminated this problem, so I would love to see some piccies when you get it all sorted!

Private sleeping area

The only thing they might not be happy about - and it all sounds brilliant! - is a private enclosed sleeping area. A hutch often has a private part, no window or open doorway looking out into the room if you see what I mean. You could use a box with a material door flap - they will push through - or simply place it so that they are looking out at the understairs wall and feel enclosed. My piggies have the whole conservatory to run about in and they have a cage with no door to sleep in. But the smaller plastic sleeping areas inside the cage provide enough security.
I know what you mean about they have their 'own' area - mine won't come into the living room although the sliding door to the conservatory is open. They simply won't!
