removing hairballs?

just wondering what people have found effective for removing hairballs?

Do you mean when their hair matts?
I have a long haired girl and if she gets matted (tends to in the butt area) i gentle bathe and massage the matting with my fingers, if it doesn't come loose i carefully cut it out..
