Been browsing certain sites and found an advert advertising guinea pigs for sale. The reason was the guy was getting a big dog that may hurt them and he had no time for them. What the hell.Any,new animals I get have to fit in,with the ones * have.If they don't I don't get them.Has no time for existing piggies but time for a dog.Don't get it. I wanted dagus for years but didn't get them as researched rehoming sites and a couple were getting rid because the dogs wouldn't leave them alone.I have two dogs,so no degus. Woman down the road sold her retriever that as he had had for years to get kittens. Rant ended.Had to get it off my chest and hubby gets bored with me ranting about animals

Sadly, it's not rare at all, especially in the run up to Christmas when many piggies are dumped, so the kids can be upgraded to a cute puppy. :(

I am shocked. Does that really really happen? I always thought that was a kind of urban myth.

I'm a mother of two. I cant imagine doing something like that even if my kids asked me to (which they wouldnt). What a shocking bad example to set :(

I have a work colleague whose house is divided with a system of barriers/baby gates etc to stop the various animals who live there annoying each other. I tell him, its the animal's house, he just pays the mortgage!

It’s such a common site, i based my GCSE photography on this, I'm gutted i don’t have access to all my work, but i basically wrote a fake advert similar to what you’d see for a dog, but for a child, saying selling the child as want a puppy blah blah blah, the took pictures of children sat in different places holding the sign, and it got some really strange reactions from people because as soon as you see a child as for sale it’s horrible and yet you see animals being traded in every day and it’s just become the norm!

My piggies havr their own room away from the dogs The dogs here first) but if they ever really tried to get in and hurt them.piggies would be rehomed

See this all too often unfortunatly. "We got guinea pigs but our very large dogs don't like them so we're getting rid". I do wonder why people think it's a good idea to get small rodent like animals when they have big animals like dogs, and expect them to get along.

Not a personal criticism of you madguinealady, just a little rant.

i do not have a dog, but i do have a cat who is very protective over the piggies, i could not see my life without the little ones in it, most of my piggies were from the adoption area in pets at home, most were abandoned or abused by their old owners, i do not know why anyone would do this my piggie seth was a cruelty case he was hit on the head, he had burn marks due to urine scalding, he is now epileptic, and has a heart murmur, he is 9 years old, oh and he lived in a cage suitable for 1 piggie with 20 other piggies his growth was stunted.

Jeesh that's awful! I guess people are just selfish and don't think through the responsibility of having ANY kind of pet. I can't think why anyone could be that cruel to anything, especially not a defenseless animal.

People not used to guineas are often surprised when they realise they have individual personalities and not just some brainless furbie.

I'm a sucker too when I go to pets at home...I have to have my purse taken away from me! I got my beloved Billy from the adoption part. He had just been left there unwanted. Sadly, for them it's profit that is paramount and these left over piggies get shunted off to the back! I do wonder sometimes what would happen if they didn't get rehomed?

Don't worry not offended.Knew I had the space to seperate them and my dogs aren't viscius, just interested. They watch the hamsters but don't try and eat them. They have jumped off the sofa in front of the dogs and never been harmed.

It depends on the dog. I have an enormous black labrador who adores the bunny and the guinea pigs and shows no kind of interest (other than trying to lick the rabbit). My mother's tiny whippet however would kill and eat the bunny and piggies before you could even blink :(
