I just read the toy thread on here and it says to replace wooden things every three to six months. Mine are years old! Is that bad? I had no idea they needed to be replaced as they look in good condition. What is the reason for needing to replace them? I feel so neglectful now.

No need to feel neglectful... I think the reason to change the wooden ones is the same reason why we should change our wooden cutting boards in the kitchen... wood harbors germs and bacteria can grow on them. I may be wrong but it makes sense.

Interesting that you bring this up, I very rarely change my wooden hideys etc. Maybe I should do this more frequently. I had also read somewhere that you can sterilise them in the oven at high temperature or microwave (if no metal parts). Maybe that's an option?

Was wondering the same thing about how to sterilize wooden items...as i have a few wooden huts and tunnels (not in use at the moment) that i have had for a while in the guinea pig box... but have kept them out the cage recently as i was unsure about how long wooden things can be kept for and how to clean/sterilize etc.

I dunk all my wooden kitchen utensils and boards in baby steriliser (my best friend) and let them dry naturally. I thought if kept clean some wood was naturally antibacterial although I forget which. I know that tea towels can harbour germs spreading more back on to things as you dry them. Again i let things dry naturally if at all possible and only use the tea towel for one session then it's in the wash. I also use a spray bottle of diluted baby sterilising fluid to clean the piggy cage and one with a drop of washing up liquid added to it for cleaning the kitchen. It's much cheaper than fancy sprays and does the job just as well. I even put it in with their towels when washing them. Supermarket brands are cheaper and just as good as Milton. Try it you might like it!

Thanks for the tip will nip out later for some baby sterilizer, totally forgot you can use that...haha i used to buy it when i had rabbits to clean stuff... :)

Whilst I understand some concern over wood, if it were that lethal hutches would be deathtraps surely? I clean both my wooden gear and hutches with vanodine (farm strength disinfectant) and would only dispose of them if I had fungal issues (and even then id not want to replace my entire hutch!). I use milton in my bottles etc so I dont replace those unless clouded over either.

could you not spray them with cage disinfectant as some is supposed to be okay to leave on cages and just let them dry out thouroughly so smell gone
