how do you report somewhere to the rspca? ive never done it before, and want to now.

also if the bedding/food etc is ok will they actually do anything about overcrowding/illness/animals mixed together in pens?

also is it ok to report the place even though i dont live in that area? do i just call the rspca local to that place?

The receptionist at the vets was telling me how they had reported a pet shop to the RSPCA because of overcrowding (up to 16 piggies in a cage) and a giant rabbit in a really small cage. Apparently the RSPCA said they were satisfied that they were clean and had food and water - didn't seem concerned about anything else! >:( She was furious! >:(

thats what I'm worried about :(

at this place there were 4 big rabbits, and 3 guinea pigs squashed into a cage 1 and a half foot by 1 foot

the rabbits were jumping all over the place trying to get space, and the poor piggies were terrified.

if the rabbits were trampling each other, I'm worried what will happen to those piggies :'(

I reported a neighbour last month because her dog was in a disgraceful condition and it was wandering around every night alnight.,I knocked on her door and told her it was doing its business on everyones garden etc ..No one came out

Last week i was reading in bed and i heard a car bang and then a dog screaming in agony..it was her dog. I couldnt sleep all that night for being upset over it, It died apparently the same night. They didnt help save that dog did they! :'(

Unfortunatly the RSPCA don't have the legal power to do something in some circumstances which they would still consider unsuitable. However I would say to phone the local branch and report whatever is going on. At least you've done what you can.

Hopefully they will take this more seriously because of the mix of rabbits and guinea pigs! I just couldn't believe the lack of concern for overcrowding either though. >:(

i hope so. does anyone know the phone number to call? is it a general one, or regional?

Is it a pet shop? If so, contact your local council. They issue the licences and have the power to revoke them, too.

its a garden centre

and its not where i live, its near my mums house

the piggies were stunning too. they were all silver agouti rex's or ivory rex's, and there was loads of them

As daftscotslass said, you're far better off calling your local council - these are the people who issue the pet shop licenses and who dictate the stocking densities of animals.

So, if they were overcrowded, then they will be able do something about it. Many licenses also specify procedures for ill animals. However, the RSPCA will likely only be able to something if there is actual mistreatment taking place - i.e. no water. They have no power to enforce council regulations.

However, don't be surprised if the shop are actually within the legal stocking limits - you'd be surprised at the number of animals that can be kept in a small space in a pet shop...

its not just the overcrowding that was a problem.

there was a parrot who looked in a terrible state, yet they were still selling him, he looked absolutely aweful, and had half of his feathers missing

but then again this a shop who sold me merlin in the state that he was in, and i spent £60-70 getting his skin healthy again so they obviously dont care about the animals health

Go for it Lez O0 O0 O0 O0
Let us know if anything happens, hopefully they'll contact you with what they've done O0
Well done love :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Hi

Yes I would report them.

We've reported to the rspca and the council and the situation was sorted, the shop is no longer open.

Jaye

just an update, i found out before i called the rspca, that the place has now been bought out, and has new owners who are changing it all. my mum paid a visit today and said it was a lot better. I'm going to go in again on wed when i go back to visit my family and check it out again
