Hello

I am looking for some advice re: what to expect when getting a pig from a rescue, when I want to bond one with my existing pet. I registered an interest in one at a rescue but after an exchange of details haven’t heard again for a few days. I realise they must be incredibly busy and also that they need to generate as much interest as possible for their charges as they must have many that fall through, but I just feel a bit in limbo and not sure what I need to be doing. Another rescue I contacted were vague about what pigs they had available and seemed to only rehome in pairs when I’m after a single.

I am in the Norfolk area and can’t see any approved rescues local to me, so I will be having to operate at a distance and would like to know what the usual process is as it’s quite a commitment to travel. Is it expected that I would bring my pig with me to try out a bond, or would the rescue pig be able to come home with me for a trial bonding period? Do you need to visit a few times before you can reserve or do you need to ask to reserve before you can visit?

If anyone could share their experiences of rehoming a single rescue pig it would be much appreciated as though I am patient and happy to wait for the right one, I want my girl to have a companion soon.

Thanks.

I know that the rescue local to me do sometimes have singles but there are more pairs. I recently tried to get my current rabbit to bond (didn’t happen in the end) but the process (same for pigs) at that rescue is that you take your animal to them and leave it there for a days while they find the best match (you have a say in which ones to try - first choice, second choice etc, but ultimately it’s the animal’s choice) and then once bonded, you bring them both home. Before any of that, they often want to do home checks - be it an actual visit to your house, or with detailed explanations and photographs of their housing and care arrangements. When I have rescued in the past, it has been quite a long process which took a few weeks to complete. I went in, saw the ones (rabbits in that case) I was interested in, registered my interest and they then came out and did all their checks before confirming I could bring them home.

Thanks - that’s useful to know. I have given the home info and pics but although they have been ok it stalls after that and I don’t know if I need to follow it up or wait for them. I wish I could just pop in and have a face to face conversation.

The main reason for rescuing is so that we find a good choice for Rosie so will keep plugging.

I would give it a few days longer and then give them a call. They aren’t going to mind you calling them, if anything it shows you’re serious about rescuing! It’s frustrating not being kept up to date of where things are in the process and with the paperwork! Ultimately if there are no single pigs available, then it isn’t going to be a quick process and as you say, it needs to be the right match for your girl.
