Ive just got 2 rescue guinea pigs and they are supposed to be 8 weeks but they are only 200g each and look no where near as big as they should be.. I was wondering how old a 200g pig would be and what I should feed them because they are so small.

Hi and welcome!

Your piggies are on the small side and either likely younger than stated or their mum is overbred/neglected. However, as long as your new piggies are putting weight each week until the end of the quick growth phase at ca. 4-6 months of age, there is no reason to worry. Baby birthing weights can vary from 40g to 140g - that is three times the size, and that will carry through over the first months.

Please weigh your guinea pigs once weekly at the same time in the feeding cycle and write down the weights for comparison. Just put your youngsters on our recommended general diet, and they will realise their optimal weight/size in due time. They won't reach adulthood until they are about 15 months old, so that is over a year's time you've got! Overfeeding won't help - they will simply stop sooner to grow quickly and then start run into fat. The second link helps you to work out whether they are fine for their size. Healthy adult weights can vary from 800g (and sometimes even lower) to over 1500g; the average weight of an adult pet piggy is about 900-1300g.
