Have just seen this on a rescue centre website.

Semolina was found dumped in a box outside a shop with three other rabbits, he is a neutered male and has been at the centre since 12/9/07. He is currently sharing a pen with a guinea pig called Stitch and enjoy each others company, as Stitch often uses him to sleep on and are both looking to be homed together if possble.

http://www.crrc.co.uk/contact.htm . This is the link to the website. Surely this is not right for a rescue centre?

er, a bit worrying if the rabbit uses the guinea to sleep on....lie at the wrong angle and thats one suffocated guinea you've got....these places are mental. The chances are that telling them not to keep the animals together will get not much response apart from "they're bonded, they've always lived together, it'd be cruel to seperate them"
Your best bet is to at least inform them that its no longer seen as acceptable for rabbits & guineas to be kept together, so hopefully they will no longer do pairings like these.
I don't have a link to the rspca thing which suggests buns & pigs shouldn't be kept together - does anyone else? You could refer them to that?

I have e-mailed them to question it and pointed out that the rspca do not recommend putting rabbits and guinea pigs together. Being a rescue centre you would expect them to know that though. I have been to the centre and have a rabbit I adopted from there and have to say I was very impressed with them. I didn't see rabbits and guinea pigs kept together, they were all in seperate pens. Also it is not a case of them always having been together as it says the rabbit was dumped with 3 other rabbits so they have obviously put them together since they got to the centre.

I have also emailed them and expressed surprise and concern that a reputable rescue would do this and included a web llink to a page which explains very thoroughly why they should not be kept together. I hope they can come up with an alternative.

I've e-mailed them in the past and had a reply to say it was 'ok to do this' ::) 98)

It's like trying to teach the unteachable. I think it should be noted though that anyone can be a rescue, there are no laws in place there should be really. :)

I think its the other way round, if I read that right, guinea pig sleeps on rabbit.

But either way, no, they shouldnt be together - I thought that the Animal Welfare Act wasnt just recommendations or guidelines, I thought that was LAW now?

hopefully if enough people email them the poor little guinea pig will be removed before it gets hurt, hoping the poor little mite will be put in quarentine incase it has caught something from the rabbit. would have thought rescues would have known the rspca's guide lines. i am currently at the moment trying to get something done with the fodder store near me, have sent email to rspca and they are looking into it as they keep rabbits and guinea pigs together too. good luck with getting the bunny and guinea pig seperated.
