Good morning all
I have been offered a rescue guinea pig but have been advised she has a couple of issues, I'm going to see her later today.
I have been advised she has sunken tear ducts (believe thats what they called it) ltheu said she seems fine at the moment but could potentially need eye drops in the future. Also, she has something misaligned with her jaw so the teeth dont line up, again the teeth are fine and not overgrown at the moment but could potentially need a little work further in time
She is six months old.

Have any of you had any experience with issues like these and how have you coped? To keep the little ones healthy and comfortable

I would really appreciate your input

They said she either had sunken tear ducts or eyes, can quiet remember the phrasing

@Vickyg Is she white by any chance? It sounds like she could be a lethal pig if she is.

You'll need to keep a very close eye on her weight and eating and at the first sign of any issues she will need to see a vet for a dental check. The vet we use at TEAS is the Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic in Northampton. Simon Maddock has done 100's of conscious dentals on piggies and he is the reason TEAS exists.

If she does have sunken tear ducts then she may need to have them flushed or have eye drops. A good guinea pig vet could advise.

Does the rescue provide ongoing support with vet costs related to the existing issues?

You should also take into account whether you can afford a piggie with ongoing health issues as vets aren’t cheap (as we all know!) I currently take my boar to Simon once a month for his teeth doing, so would recommend him 100%.
Good on you for giving her a home if you decide to take her - I’m sure you’ll give her a wonderful life!

She is black and white I believe
I have guineas with issues already but never come across these ones before.
I'm going to see her later and get a better idea of ger issues etc
Thank you for your kind words

Keep us updated and a pigture or 2 would be nice. I'm sure you will anyway but ask detailed questions about all her problems. If it was me, I'd write down the answers or ask for a list of her problems so you can go away and think about whether you can take her on.

Just an update on the pig. She is quiet young I would say four to six months, she was black brown with a little white.
She has a condition, probably from bad breeding. It's something to do with her jaw which affects the eyes (you might understand what I mean from this). She totally looks fine, really healthy. What doesn't help was,she was treated by a locum and the vet doesn't have any record of the treatments and issues. They couldn't show anything. So it was it was difficult for me to comprehend. My local vet asked for the pigs records to be sent across so they could advise me on treatments but as they had no record of them.

Looks like you’ll be starting from scratch if you have her - which might not be a bad thing if you have a decent vet. I know what you mean by the eyes and her misaligned jaw - let’s hope it’s fixable.
