i noticed on preloved that someone in my area is starting a guinea pig rescue, one of my friends contacted her about pigs so that she could go and have a look at her set up, when she enquired she was told that the only piggie she had available was a possibly pregnant female that she could have asong as she didn't mind that she was pregnant mallethead my friend arranged to go and collect piggy yesterday but couldn't make it so asked me to go for her, of course i said yes:))
Well i got there and was invited in, however she didn't ask my name so i never told her, she just assumed i was my friend, she wouldn't let me see her set up or any of the other pigs, she said the others had homes to go to so there was no point showing them to me :x she simply handed the terrified pig to me and said " as you know she might be pregnant so if you want to take her you can " :x she gave me no information as to where she came from, age or anything, she never asked my name, contact details or address, she never asked if id ever kept piggies before or if i knew what their housing and dietry needs were, she simply let me wlk out with her:(.
To top it all the cheeky madam then responded to an add of mine asking to adopt some of my rescue pigs, obviously i can safely say that under no circumstances will she ever get her hands on any of mine, i did however respond and tell her that she would need a home check before the adoption proccess could begin, surprisingly she's agreed and said the pigs are for her, now i have to arrange for one of my friends to pretend to be me to go around and do a home check {:|
The poor piggy who at the moment is called mad mary is terrified I'm hoping that with some lovely food and some much needed tlc i'll soon make her realize that she's now safe :)

OUCH!

Best of luck with that poor terrified girl and your game of shuffle round...

Perhaps you could privately pm the rescues from here in your area, with the details of this person, so that she does not try to obtain guinea pigs from them. xx

that's terrible...

It's not uncommon for rescues to go wrong... Here in Sweden we've had two recent situations where animal-loving girls in their twenties have started "rescues" and quickly lost grip of the situation... One listed all of her animals on a reptile forum as live feed (not illegal here) or breeder pairs...

All those piggies, rabbits, degus and rats were saved, though.

I think many don't realise all the work that goes into rescuing animals. You need more than a love for animals...

hmm i wish you all the best in your endeavour! maybe you could invite her to your rescue suggesting that you work together and educate her on how rescues should be run!

the only problem with that is she has already met me and assumed i was someone else rolleyes
i didn't lie to her though, she assumed who i was and had she asked me i would have told her

Gosh you are going to tie yourself in knots with you being her and her being you, how confusing malletheadmallethead It just shows you anyone can say they are a rescue and just do as they like. I hate to say it but I bet you end up with more piggies from there. Poor scary Mary. At least she and her babies will be safe with you. Well done for acting so quickly.

as far as i know there is no other people local to me that take in unwanted guineas, only the local RSPCA branch, the piggies from there usually come to me

OMG! that's shocking she could do that! I mean, you would at least offer them to a pet shop or the rspca (do you have the same over there?) but to offer them as food 8...

Petcrazy - glad you rescued the poor little mite. Some people have no idea and it makes me wonder why the wanted to rescue piggies in the first place! Def a dilemma re doing house checks. Are they very local? tut tut.
x

Tani they are literally a 5 min walk from me :(
when she responded to my add she said she wanted the piggies asap so i presumed she wants them to rehome :(

God, that's a bit awkward! I can't believe she wants to physically take them from a rescue place to rehome herself! Did she charge you for taking the pregnant piggy? Have you got anyone who can visit that knows what to look for? maybe you could ask the rspca if you are really worried as they might scare her a bit more then just a local rescue assessing. Might be worth doing what one of the others suggested i.e. letting your other local rescues know not to supply her. {:|

I swear I think I nearly fainted in shock when I saw that! I'm so glad they were saved!

Such an awkward situation for you petcrazy, I think its a good idea to get in touch with other rescues to give them a heads up. I personally would be tempted to go to the RSPCA and explain the situation, maybe they can gently inform her of the basic adoption principles, maybe she really doesnt have a clue that she needs to be thinking about where the pigs are going to, home visits etc, its kind of frightning to think about.
So glad you rescued that poor little piggie at least now she will be givng birth in a loving caring home.

Oh deary me another person thinking well but doing it all so wrong.Thank goodness people like you petcrazy are out there.I always take my hat off to people setting up a rescue its alot of work and effort and people can get caught out when things start piling up.Hope she halts soon as possible

at the moment she has an add asking for donations of food, hutches and bedding to set up her rescue :(

Just a thought, but why not approach it from a totally different angle i.e. you can pretend that you never realised it was her that you got your piggy from and explain that there is probably no need for 2 rescues within 5 mins of each other but that you are happy if she wants to help with rescues and you can house them? Not sure she would go for that if she is adament on keeping them but if she doesnt buy it, maybe you can just say you didnt want her to feel under observation when you went around that day so you didnt say who you were but that you are willing to help her on how to be a good rescue.

If she declines or gets stroppy and isnt willing to listen to advice then it's def time to get the rspca in to check her out.!

i have been giving that some thought :)) i didn't lie to her as it wasn't me that contacted her in the first place and i only went as my friend couldn't make it. I'm not sure now whats going on as she has removed both of her adds :{

What an odd situation. Glad you got the possibly pregnant piggy though. Hope she's not actually pregnant. Let us know how she gets on too. x

But why would she want guinea pigs from you to rehome? Is she charging people for them? Or does she just like the idea of being a "rescue"

this is what i think, when i collected the piggy she told me that she had just adopted a giant rabbit and now she has an add asking for an adult male rabbit to keep her female rabbit company :(

There's a rescue I've heard of that takes in unneutered pedigree rescue dogs but then uses them for breeding. They say the breeding is to fund the rescue, and they get grants for being a rescue!

Some people are just . . .

go around the place give her loads of adive and say be careful the rspca will come and check if ** a resuce put her off *** she seems like she dont knwo what she doing or what she want to do. this is a sad thing i hate seeing things like this and tell her there are lloads in resuce if she want to do this tell her to get them neutured.
