My friend picked me up from work today and as we were driving home I asked her to stop at a pet shop I hadn't seen before so I could get the snakes and bearded dragon some munchies. Little did I know, they also had rabbits and guinea pigs. Obviously I inspected them to make sure they were ok and I spotted 3 beautiful ginger abis in the same cage. After a closer look at their cute piggy bums I noticed one of the pigs was a boy and the other 2 females. I asked if I could handle one as I was a bit concerned she may be pregnant. Of course, this was the case. I felt at least 3 little pups in her and asked the guy to take the boar out before he gets at the other girl (if he hadn't already).
He did move the boy and put him in with another without much fuss (they were very young). It broke my heart to leave her there, uncertain of her and the pups fates.
I'm now in the process of trying to convince the OH to let me get her, loom after her until she's had the pups and they're old enough to be separated, upon which I would find them loving homes.
He knows how attached I'd get so it's a firm no. :( I kind of feel that I've let the lovely sow down.

I'm sorry. :(

I would probably be in your boat and end up buying her just so she is out of that horrible state. Obviously the shop won't learn anything from it and end up profiting from the poor sow.

I think the most helpful thing would be to get her and show your OH that you are strong enough to let the pups go once they're old enough.

I'm sorry that's a awful story, petstore ppl are so careless it makes me sad, but sometimes we can't help it's not your fault don't blame yourself.

Thanks. I did just want to take her away from the shop without asking the OH. I already knew that he would not support my rescue mission.
He said that technically we have already rescued 8 animals and have given them a wonderful life in our home but we don't have the space or finances to support another one (plus babies) and I can't possibly save every animal.
I know he's right (he is the logical one). I'll be going back in a few days to check on her. More than likely I'll be leaving with her next time.

Poor little girl :( I wonder if, given her condition, the shop owner could be persuaded to let her go with you for no charge? That way, he wouldn't be profiting but there would surely be benefits for him in not having to spend extra money in looking after 'unexpected' babies, and she would get the care and attention from you that she desperately needs.

Oh poor girly :( I know it's awful not being able to take them. I often see piggies id love to take, but can't otherwise id end up with millions! I hope she ends up with someone that has a clue what they are doing if she doesn't end up with you.

Oh it is horrible when you have to walk away,we have done it many many times and it never gets easier these are the ones that you can't stop thinking about and you feel you are the only one that can save them.Don't get me wrong we have given in to our harts lots of times but your husband is right in a way you have to take a step back some times and think long and hard.

I agree with above posts. It's heartbreaking to be in this situation but, if you bought her, you'd only be making a space in the pet shop for another guinea pig.

That's true. Although I always feel awful, because it's not their fault (the piggies) I feel like they deserve a good life too (every pig does!) so it's a hard situation to be in :(

Well after much discussion, I still can't have her as we don't have the space and also, I would get so attached and everyone that would come to re home the babies would be vetted to death and then I'd get really upset when they all go off to their new homes. It's inevitable.
So I've done the next best thing. I called the pet shop and spoke to the guy to see how she was doing and advised him on how best to look after her in her condition. He has my number if he has any more questions or concerns. He made a list of veg to give her and she's in the cage with her sister and they seem to get on well. So its not a total tragedy. He actually seemed to care, which is a big weight off my mind.

Its really good that he is listening to your advice you have really helped that guinea

Poor girl :( atleast he seems to care though. maybe you can offer your services like once a week to make sure all the piggies are properly sexed? its good that he listened to you so maybe he would appriciate the help

He's just an old guy and seems really nice. I just hope he is actually that sweet and isn't just trying to get rid of me haha!
