I was just thinking to get peanut another play mate in the next week so hes not lonely anymore, and I'm not sure to go to my rescue centre or not, As Iv heard awful things about petshops and them keeping too many pigs in cage, keeping them with bunnys,..and so on, but then I think well at least the rescue guinneas are in a happy place now, rather than a pet shop or with someone who cant look after them, So is it a rescue centre I should go to or should I rescue them from the pet shop ?/ x

I would do rescue as there are so many piggys that need rehoming. You can take your piggy you have now to the rescue centre to see if they bond with the pig you have in mind.

I would certainly do this first!

Definatly go to a rescue. In the petshop it's not just the conditions they are kept in, but the conditions in which petshop stock are often bred from. They'll come from small animal farms, where breeding animals are kept in horrible conditions, sows will be over bred from having back to back litters, and when they're too sick to breed anymore they'll be killed (and not always humanely.) They will also cull babies with defects that would make them difficult to sell, and due to inbreeding and poor conditions, petshop animals often have problems with poor health, and shorter life spans.

By buying from petshops you're not only saying that this sort of breeding is ok, but you're also telling the petshop that keeping the piggies in the wrong conditions is ok as well. While you will be making things better for the one piggy you get from the petshop, you're allowing another poor piggy to be put into the exact same situation.

It's only by not buying livestock from petshops that we can stop petshops actually selling livestock.

You can't "rescue" from petshops, as it is a vicisious cycle. Rescue should really not involve any money changing hands. (A token dontation is different, however.)

Agree entirely, definitely rescue.

~Rescue ..
if you buy from a pet shop..however sad the case may be..you are only supporting a trade that sees the animals as stock..and you are freeing up a space for them to put another on sale.

Where abouts are you? if you have an adult boar and he is neutered then a sow would be good..we have the lovely Ginnie ..if he isn't neutered then a baby boar..we have 3 of those aswell!:))

Thanks guys! I dont even know what happens to the pets that arent sold at the end of their time at the petshop before more baby animals are bought it, Ill pop down to my local rescue then and take little peanut with me to see who he picks, you are right that throwing money into the livestock that are sold in pet shops would be awful now I know that all the over breeding and awful things happen to them, we really should make this known to the public, if i didnt know about the guesome details of buying from a pet store, then I doubt others will...! x

Another vote for rescue here!

Be warned - rescue pigs are addictive!

Good luck finding a friend for Peanut!

It's hardly a fact they advertise, and I'm sure many due ethically source their pets from humane, nice breeders but you can never be sure. I'm always suspicous when they say they "get their animals from a reputable breeder" what breeder wouldn't want to keep tabs on where their animals are going? But thats another matter thats irrelevant to a rescuse forum!

Tell all your friends, and they'll tell their friends. Word of mouth is the best way to educate, really. I'm sure peanut will be very happy picking out a new friend for himself!

My website has a "Why Rescue?" page www.lbgpr.co.uk

It just confirms what has already been said here.

Take your time and you'll get sorted out with a little piggy friend, all the best !

but also keep it in mind that there are many, many unreputable rescues around - it's always better to get a personal recommendation of a particular rescue from someone you trust that to just go to the nearest one.

really good point, they are in the minority but unfortunately do exist.

But definantely go for rescue piggy if possible. Although i have to be honest we have a mixture of 2 bought, 2 rescued and 2 dumped on me at work! xx>>>

good luck and i can't wait to see the new addition

I would definately go with a rescue, some pets are quite good while some are terrible. There are so many unwanted piggies out their desperate for a loving home and a new start and there is nothing more satisfying than giving them this chance.:)
