Hello
I have just rescued 2 piggies, 2 year old female (I'm told haven't had chance to sex them yet) living in small hutch 30 x 10 x 12, fed on wagg, little hay, little veg, and they are very smelly and dirty, one has crusty ears and a weepy eye.

The girl I'm most concerned about seems to have a huge belly, I'm not sure if its too much of a poor diet, worms, pregnancy or something else, her belly sticks out at both sides

photos below (flash makes them look in better condition than they really are for some reason)

Also do i need to wean them off the wagg and onto science selective? and the same with veggies do i introduce them gradually?

Thanks Kelly

Where did you rescue them? You need to sex them incase one is male
If you want them fed on Science Selective your gradually need to switch them to it from the Wagg as guinea pigs have delicate tummies.

You can wean them off the wagg very slowly and veggies should also be introduced very slowly.
I would check the sex asap as one does look to have a large belly and could be pregnant, if she gives birth with the 'male' still in there then she may get pregnant again straight away which would be extremely stressful on her and her body. You can post photos of their 'bits' and we can help identify them.
Good luck with them, they are beautiful x)

Thanks very much for your help, I will have a go at sexing now any problems and I will get some pics up.

we had been talking about taking on some more piggies got another double storey hutch at weekend (which is in need of some repair) we said we would go back to the rescue www.sdah.co.uk where we got bubble and squeak from when it was all fixed up, but I was having a look on gum tree / trade it / free ads (as i do too often) and came across there photo in that tiny hutch looking really dirty, ad said something like free guinea pigs kids have grown up so they are no longer wanted I messaged them and offered vet references and said i was happy if the children wanted to come see them again or if they wanted to come make sure they were being cared for and reply was something like not needed when can you come and get them :(

omg >=[ some people!

so glad they are with you and have a nice home. i cant really help but it is taking me ages to wean my piggy Dylan off the museli and on to science selective as i weigh him and if there is no museli he drops weight so this may take time.

As a food, actually Wagg isn't that bad, it may be cheap but it is enriched with vitamins, does not have any colourings, or sugar beet pulp & other unnecessary stuff in it rolleyes Yes it may encourage selective feeding, but there again not all of us would want to eat plain toast for every meal lol :))

They are gorgeous piggies, the grey one is a silver agouti rex I love those x)

Well done for rescuing them. Some people just don't deserve to own piggies do they? grrrr

Right by the looks of it they are both girlie's just in case here is a photo of the one in question, I have tried applying gentle pressure above and to the sides, there is no penis protruding when i do this like it did with the boys i already have

you will have to excuse as I'm quite new to guineas, what does everyone use to worm theres (that being that there are more than one product available like as it is for dogs)

forgot to add, could there be any other reasons for her (smokie) carrying this extra weight? I know its probably best I get them checked by my vet tomorrow just to rule out anything medical as well

Oh the poor little things. How awful they were kept in such a tiny cage. I am glad you have them. I would get them checked over by a vet as soon as possible as they could have any number of things wrong with them. Due to their poor diet they will be lacking in vitamins. I would buy vitamin c for them. I get mine from hay experts online. I crush it and put it on a slice of cucumber.
