Hi everyone,

One of our Piggies, who we adopted a month ago, has been through treatment for a Respiratory infection. We also noticed some hairloss around one of her eyes, underneath the eye. The vet advised that this was secondary to the infection as this one eye was weeping and fur would come off when she was scratching.

Two weeks later we are off the medication and Josie has been for a check-up. They have discharged her but she has a large patch of fur missing now around her eye (still underneath) and the vet advised to leave this be for a couple of weeks but see if it gets any bigger or spreads elsewhere. Has anyone else had a piggy with hair loss from a URI?

Thanks for any help! :)

Jane

I have seen piggies that have been ill for various reasons get a few crusts under their eyes which can affect the hair. This is usually where they aren't cleaning themselves very well and usually resolves very quickly. However, you cannot discount a lowered immune system and the potential for a fungal infection to take hold. This will be why your vets have said to keep an eye on whether it gets bigger or starts to spread. If the skin is not looking dry and flaky then I would follow the vets advise, if it starts to look flaky, piggy starts scratching it etc then I would go back for further advise

I had a pig that had a chronic nasal problem and also had uri's due to neglect from a previous owner. He had hair loss round his eyes. It is where the discharge dried and they constantly wipe it, like your vet said 👍

Hello,
We are heading to the vets tomorrow with both of our girls. Josie now has some white/grey skin behind her ear, so want to get this checked out as may be fungal. Galilei has the snuffles so may have a cold/URI. Just want healthy happy piggies. We will get there. Their new c&c cage is arriving early next week so looking forward to that and seeing them happy in it, just hope they are better soon..

Back from the vets, Gal has a URI as suspected so treatment for that has started. They have both had a spot-on treatment. The vet advised the alopecia is improving in Josie but keep an eye on it. Vet advised that viral/colds/URI are very contagious between pigs, but fingers crossed this clears it up!
