Hi, going to vets shortly but as they seem totally dense when it comes to gigs wanted to ask you guys. I have a girl Merry who was seen in June as she was huffy and had runny eyes. A clueless vet fluffed through the consult and we came away with baytril for 7 days and metacam and eye drops. She improved and all was well. 3-4 weeks ago she was 'off' again, well in every respect but a tad huffy and bit quiet. Again the vet found nothing conclusive and we got metacam and 10 days septrin and again all came good. This morning she is huffy again, not keen on her kale which is VERY strange and a bit less active. I just wanted to know other peoples experiences and what meds they have found that work well.
She is an outdoor pig in a hutch within a well ventilated stable. They have plenty of warm bedding, an insulated hutch and a microwave pad if they choose to use it. I changed the hay to see if that was anything to do with it and it has made no difference and she's always been on megasorb with no problems.
Thoughts please?

Am sorry she is poorly again, you could ask your vet about either Zithromax, Doxycycline or Marbocyl. If she has any fluid on her chest she may also need a diuretic. Bisolvon is good too for clearing mucous and I have also used steam therapy using 2 drops of Olbas oil. I can help more at lunch but I have to start work in a mo.

What is her bedding out of interest?

One of our boars has just been diagnosed with an allergy, I've got an idea what it is, I'm thinking it could have been the hay I used not too long back as I was trying another type but it was really dusty and flared up my own allergies a fair bit. He's been given antibiotics and some other stuff, I think an anti inflammatory.

(I'm not saying yours is ill due to an allergy)

I hope you find the cause for your guinea's problem.

Been to the vets and got lucky, saw a locum whose favourite animal is gigs! Baytril, metacam and something for helping the gut (name has escaped me). Also bought critical care home just in case. She has settled after her trip and has eaten a scrap of fennel and some kale. Fingers crossed!

I have changed the hay just in case but to no effect :(

Could it be the megazorb? I've had that previously and found it a bit dusty so ended up switching to fleece.

I'm just coming up with suggestions, I don't have a clue really :/

The product for the gut could be probiotic? if so you need to give it at least an hour apart from the Baytril as they can affect each other. Did the vet think it was an infection then?

Megazorb can be dusty so is a possible factor.

Yeah I'm just coming up with idea's @helen105281 with @Elliegirl saying her guinea's had antibiotics then became ill again.

We had this happen with Sheamus who is sadly no longer with us, he would get a URI/Ear infection, he'd get the meds, be get better, be ok for 2 - 4 weeks then he'd be ill again, he was ill several times last year, he didn't pass because of the URI's though it was because vets did guessed diagnoses and then took their time sorting him out when they found out he had 2 bladders stones, he had been ok for about 8 months, quite sad really.

If it is a bug it is possible that it is resistant to the antibiotics already given, ideally a culture needs to be done but this cannot be done while on antibiotics and sometimes there is no time to culture as the pig is in need of treatment.

The antibiotics have worked the last twice and seem to be sorting it this time, suspect it's too shorter course of antibiotics so it's not completely clearing it and it's coming back. I have no real reason to suspect megazorb she's been on it all her life and has been fine until June this year. I will keep it in mind though.

Her 7days baytril finishes Weds so will get her rechecked before it runs out.
