We discovered on the recent bank holiday Sunday, that Poppet, one of our 2yr old boars was breathing rapidly in the morning. We took him to our regular vet who said sounds like a respiratory infection (we had caught it early) and to treat with baytril and metacam. The only other symptom apart from the rapid breathing was a tiny bit of crusty eye but there was no evidence of nasal discharge. Despite nearly two weeks of antibiotics (baytril) his respiration is still too high but his behaviour is normal .. no weight loss, eating veggies, hay etc and bossing Pippin around. Have made another appointment with the vet. I’ve read on the forum that guinea pigs with RIs do not always respond to baytril? What do we do next? Ask for another antibiotic..? Could it be something else and not an Rli? We already have a older piggie with a heart problem 😬

poor Poppet, I’m sorry he’s not better yet. I would definitely take him back and see if another AB will work for him. I’ve no experience of RTI but hope someone comes along soon to give you some advice x

Hope everything starts to improve now - for piggy and the cat.
tHank you Merab. Poppet is still no better. We’re trying sulphatrim now. He’s lost weight now so we are starting syringe feeding. What next? X-ray ? Nebuliser? I’ve no idea. We already have a piggy on frusemide. Kiki cat was diagnosed with FIP February and I’m treating off label.. she’s doing well. Meds stop next week and bloods on Tuesday. Fingers crossed. Worried about our little Poppet right now 😕. Respiratory infections seem so difficult to cure? Is this right?

I’m not a health expert so I don’t want to risk giving bad advice.
All I can offer is support and assure you that I hold you in my heart.
It’s worrying when you have a sick pet.

Many thanks Merab. No improvement. Call with vet arranged for tomorrow.

Poppet seemed to be doing well, gaining weight and eating more on his own. The vet said this morning, chest clear so stop the antibiotic. He had his veggies tonight and was seeming a bit brighter although still breathing rapidly. Then I noticed poo protruding from his bum so we gently removed. Subsequently when I got him out of the C & C cage to give him his metacam, his heart was racing so I said to my daughter to sit quietly with him. While I was downstairs he passed while she was holding him. Feel guilty that we messed with his bum and maybe stressed him. Poor Poppet... so very sorry to have lost him this early. We rescued him and Pippin from a horrible pet shop where they had no hay and no space on Christmas eve. They were so nervous for months and months, but over time they learned to trust, had lost of space and hay and veggies. I hope we gave him good life. RIP my gentle, sweet Poppet. :-(
