My guinea pig Boo died of a respitory infection a few weeks ago, basically because she was very young. I was told it wasn't contagious and could leave her with her family as she would be depressed if taken away.
Now three of the others have the same thing.
They are all on 0.25 baytril twice a day, 1 drop metacam once a day, a garlic tablet twice a day, a drop of abidec and Vicks for their noses a couple of times a day.
Two seem ok, but one seems to be going down hill, I've started critcal care today, but she is eating and seems active, apart from being whinier than usual.
Anything else I can do?

How old are the piggies.?.

I never use Vick or Albas oil on my piggies nose because it burns and makes the eyes sting. The best thing to clear the lungs is Sudafed paedriactric liquid, 0.3 mls per day.

Garlic is more of a preventative than acure, and I would not reccommend it anyway.

Why are the piggies on Metacam?.

Are you giving a probiotic with the Baytril?.

If there is no improvement in the next day or two,ask the vet to switch to Septrin which is a much better antibiotic for URTI.

Keep the piggies warm and dry,and it would not hurt to give extra water by syringe because poorly pigs can dehydrate very easily.

I do hope the piggies will be o.k. Paws crossed for them

The vet ptu them on the baytril and metacam I though the metacam was odd as I've never been prescribed it before. The pigs are only young, a few months.
I have them in the house to keep them warm and give hot water bottles (covered in plenty bof towel) and syringe water. I do have some septrim so will switch if it's not cleared up, thank you.

How are the piggies now?. If no better would it be possible for you to try and find another vet/,the one you have does not sound very clever with gps.

Metacam is not going to help a respitory infection, and as the puggies are so young, the less in the way of drugs the better.

I did think it was a lot to be giving them. All are better with the exception of one, I'll be popping her to the vet. With seprtim, is it the same dosage as the baytrill? (0.25ml)

Bisodol is like Sudafed and will clear the mucus so the antibiotic can work. You need to get it from your vet. I give mine by syringe (orally).
