Yesterday I noticed Riff was squeaking, and the newspaper was rather red. Urinalysis at the vet's today showed gritty and bloody urine. He also dislodged a tiny clot - from the urethra I imagine.

Last September Riff had a bladder stone removed. It was the size of a baked bean.

I have booked an x ray for Thursday. We will go from there. Please send healing to my very special, glossy, black friend.

Keep my fingers crossed it isn't another stone, sending healing vibes to the poor little guy.:(

I'm keeping my fingers crossed firmly for Riff and for you - I had a bladder stone lady myself!

If it's not one, it's always another! Sometimes I'm convinced they want to just give us something to do...like we don't do enough for them or anything. rolleyes

Fingers crossed for the xray, hope Riff is in the clear and the warning signs are just that.

Oh no, poor Riffy! It might be time to look into uriflow for him, perhaps ask your vet if they know about it? vibes for Riify x

That's really interesting Fiona. I have printed that info off and will show it to Simon when I'm at the vets with Pops this week. I know he will be interested if he doesn't already know about it.

I'm so hoping that this isn't another stone Lucinda. How does Riff seem in herself?

Oh Darling i'm sorry to hear about Riff :(
We all send healing wheeeeeeeeks and loads of kisses for our darling girl xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>> xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
and HUGE HUGS for you love xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thank you all.

Fiona, I can't open that link, but I'll search for it myself and have a look.

It is a PDF file so you need adobe reader on your computer, hopefully you will be able to view it.
I showed this to my vet Anne a while back and she was very interested as well. So far (touch wood) none of mine have had bladder problems but some guineas seem more prone to having problems than others and it is worth exploring preventative options!

Have managed to open it up at the college and have printed a couple of copies.

I have no idea what an adobe is or how I can get one or anything like that!

Lucinda darling you go onto google and ask for an adobe update and it will send you to adobe to download. I have to use it all the time at work, many people use adobe for their invoices and statements.
If you get stuck i'll send you some links xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

No stone!

There is some cystitis however. Riff is staying on for a bit longer to provide a decent specimen for cultures. Then we'll start septrin because there is a lot of blood present, so infection may well come, if it's not already there. Apparently there is also a capsule that dogs and cats have for cystitis, and this can be diluted with water for Riff. I am now off to Sainsburys to get some cranberry juice - and a treat for me too I think!

So pleased that Riff hasn't another stone. Fingers crossed that he will make a good recovery now that the diagnosis has been done.

Riff has been through such a lot, bless him! Lots of hugs coming his way xx

Septrin dose

HI,
I was just wondering if anyone can tell me the dose of septrin (i'm assuming its the paediatric suspension not the adult). I'm going to try it instead of baytril for my Teddy. 2 weeks post stone op-we had a little wobble last thurs when he went off his food again and wouldn't pee but he's hopefully getting back on track after a few more days of baytril+metacam. :...

The average Paediatric Septrin dose is 0.5ml twice a day. Up to 1ml twice a day has been heard of for the worst cystitis problems.

The Adult suspension would be half the dose - I was told to give 0.3ml twice a day of that one, it's just twice the strength of the paediatric.
