I have picked up ringworm on my arm from scratches 1 week after taking on 2 rescue guinea pigs. They are adorable, the vet checked them and said they aren't infected but may be carrying it so I likley got it from them. As they are not unwell the vet doesn't want to treat them.So how do I get rid of the ringworm they are carrying. I wondered if Milton/bleach would work on their cage , will Milton work on the hleece blankets I use on my lap when I take them out? Any tips would be great. Should I bath them? They are really nervous and have been through a lot the last few weeks, I don't want to upset them anymore.

my other half has just had ring worm on his back... he got some Daktarin cream from the chemist and it has almost gone now and it was quite bad and had spread. he had some other cream to start with and it did nothing so would defo recommend the Daktarin cream 100%.

Also keep going with the (human) cream. I had ringworm from my Piggies recently and it took a good 8-12 weeks to clear even using the cream 3 times a day!

Please read the advice in our guide for hygiene recommendations. I would very strongly recommend to order F10 disinfectant that is proven to kill ringworm spores; Milton won't do the trick.

I would still recommend a fungal dip to wash out any remaining spores in their coats and to prevent them coming down with it at some point, too.
This is based on my own experience with a newly adopted rescue guinea pig from a ringworm family group that was not infected by it and that underwent a regular quarantine. Unfortunately, it must have carried a spore or two into my group in its coat, as I had subsequently deal with an outbreak.

All the best for your ringworm. It's not a nice experience! :(

Thanks, very useful replys and links. How do I quarantine them, I don't have a large second cage , they are boars and ISP stressed with rehoming several times already. Also can I get the piggies a fungal bath lotion without vet prescription?

I have a c&c cage, can I just sit it in to two to quarantine ?

If you have just a pair, then you can leave them together, as long as your treat both. Quarantining acutely affected guinea pigs is more of an issue if you have several guinea pigs in close contact. By now, both will have been exposed to the spores anyway.

Information about dips as well as disinfectants we have found the most efficient while mild at the same time in our ringworm guide.

Thanks. Is it common to get re-infection. I have young children anf not sure I can deal with constant ring worm outbreaks. They are indoor guinea pigs and the idea was to let them have free range time in the living room and our small yard. I am worried about this now and thinking of puting them outside. The guy at the pet store raised eyebrows when I went to get houses and food for them, he said ' guinea pigs! no-one tells you about the ringworm, its a problem.' I didn't believe him at the time but now I wonder if that's why they were abandoned by original owner.....
