I've just been in to see my boys and noticed a sore area below My Dom's eye area with a little fur missing, on closer inspection it looks like the return of ringworm or some type of fungal infection :( Doms eye itself seems fine so that's good, I'm going to now clean it with cotton balls and a little salt warm water, before deciding to run the ringworm treatment, if it does get worse I will see a vet ASAP, any other advice would be greatfuly received.

Thanks

Hi there!

Its best to see your vet before starting treatment, to make sure you are treating with the right thing. I have treated mild fungal issues before using surolan ear drops as a topical treatment (prescribed by piggy savvy vet). The pig in question was a new addition At 12 weeks old, where she had fungal patches below one eye, beside the nose and on the edge of her ears. I applied the surolan drops as a cream onto the affected areas twice a day and it cleared up very quickly. I binned any toys that couldnt be washed (cardboard boxes/tunnels, wooden chew toys, willow balls etc) and made sure i cleaned and distinfected everything the piggy touched every other day, a full cage clean and washed my hands after touching any of the pigs or their vicinity. I had a heart failure piggy that would be at a higher risk of catching the ringworm, but she didnt in the end with strict hygiene protocols.

Your vet will best advice you on what the skin complaint is, and how best to treat it. Remove all unwashable items from his cage, and distinfect, rinse and dry his cage and belongings regularly with F10 if you can get a hold of it.

Wishing him a speedy recovery!

Thanks for your reply, i regularly use F10 spray to clean the boys cage, but take on your point it may not necessarily be ringworm and some sort of cream could be the answer, I will call the vet to make an appointment.

Other than an Emergency appointment the Next standard appointment is on Tuesday or I can see a vet at the practice I've never seen before on Monday!

If its just the one spot and he's totaly fine in himself then he should be fine to wait over the weekend. Its entirely up to yourself if you'd rather go monday and not see your usual vet, or wait till tuesday. Fungal/skin issues are common in dogs too so your bog standard small animal vet should be able to diagnose this. But its entirely your call :-)

I'm leaning towards Tuesday to see my regular vet, but I change my mind as often as the Wind so lets see. Thanks again for your help.

I've just returned back from the vets with Dom, the vet checked Dom's teeth to ensure they were not over grown, sharp or bleeding. He also checked for swelling around the jaw and told it all looks good. He said he isn't convinced it any type of fungus, but said- it could be Biological, there is some infection there and prescribed 0.2ml baytril to see if it would deal with the problem at this stage. If the Baytril doesn't work after 7 - 10 days then I should bring him back for another look, which would then entail sending a sample of infected hair off to the laboratory.

Fingers, legs and everything else crossed Dom will be Okay!

Fingers firmly crossed! If it is ringworm or fungal, you will notice the patch growing larger in the coming days. Ringworm spores can unfortunately stay live for up to 18 months or Dom can have caught it from somewhere else. You are a very observant piggy owner, so you are most likely to notice very early on when things are not yet quite clear cut for the vet to make an easy diagnosis.

Thank you Wiebke, I have all new fresh supplies of Enilconazole 100ml ready for another round of Ringworm, and F10 spray, Wipes and hand Gel.

Very happy with Dom's little sore today, any signs of scratches and soreness seems to have gone down considerably :) I was also wondering should I be giving Dom Avipro Plus with his Baytril 10 day course? :hmm:

Just looked on the Forum and confirmed I should give probiotics, so I sprinkled some Avipro plus on a carrot tip for Dom and he munched it up!

Yup, probiotics are a must with baytril. Its so hard on the guts. Avipro plus is my preferred probiotic, always does the job well. If u give around 1/3- 1/2 scoop (depending on how his guts are) 1-2 hours after each probiotic dose then hopefully he wont have any problems. :-) x

Thank you, I've not given him anywhere near that, but I can give him some more on some cucumber or carrot as his next dose isn't until this evening :)

I've just given Dom some more Avipro Plus on another piece of carrot, so that is about 1/3 of a scoop in total. I'm going to bring his next baytril dose forward an hour or so today encase I struggle to stay awake for the 2 hours after to give him his probiotics. For his next dose I'll put half a scoop on a plate and hand feed him his veg with this on it so I can gauge better how much he's had.

Well it seems my initial observations were not accurate, Dom's sore has been weeping a little as the fur is mated where the sore is from some discharge, not allot but it is there, still early days, but it doesn't seem any worse or showing signs of spreading today.
