The guineas are in quarantine ....how long after the vet gives them the all clear before we cuddle them.?! I don't want the family to catch it!

Hi welcome to the forum. I have not had to deal with Ringworm myself so I am not sure, how long since they were diagnosed? what are they being treated with and what hygiene measures are you taking (are you using F10 for example)?

I have dealt with quite a number of guinea pigs with ringworm and have never caught it myself. I use F10 disinfectant in the cages/hutches and I use F10 hand wash before and after handling any piggies. I wear a disposable apron which is changed after handling a guinea pig with ringworm.

Thanks! I'm using gloves and bleach (and rinsing down cage after), I love the idea of aprons, thanks!

And F10 smells nicer than bleach (at least to me). I would think that good hygiene measures should stop you catching it (gloves, apron, handwashing etc.), but I've also not experienced it personally. Hope you get out of quarantine soon!

As you have probably been handling them unaware the ringworm was "brewing" then please be aware that the ncubation period is typically 1-3 weeks but can be longer - It varies with the site of infection - skin infections appear more quickly than scalp infections. Although the likielihood is small that you will contract it......it cannot be ruled out.

As for handling once they've got the all clear from the vet- strictly speaking you should be able to do so straight away - However on a cautionary note I would ask if you can tell us what treatment they are recieving....some are more effective than others and, depending upon the treatment they are receiving, I might suggest waiting for a period of time to ensure it has been properly eradicated?

As mentioned in other posts, observe strict hygiene measures - wear sugical gloves, plastic apron, avoid touching your face/skin whilst handling the piggies and wash wash wash!

You would be better off using F10 disinfectant instead of bleach - the manufacturers state it is active against ringworm spores (not many are) and it is not harmful to piggies, hoomans, clothing or carpets!

I do hope this unfortunate issue can be quickly resolved so your family can enjoy their new friends....(and please check any other pets you may have)

x

PS -touch wood - never caught it from my own pigs ....or when doing rescue uplifts of pigs in poorly condition.

Thanks Pebble!
Will invest in F10
Will check name of medicine and wash from vet when I buy new gloves to touch bottles tomorrow.

Ive dealt with a ringworm case before and somehow, by some miracle, I was able to avoid catching it. I was extremely surprised! I just wore gloves, took my clothes immediately off and threw them in the wash after handling the infected guinea pig, before finally either showering straight after or washing my hands extremely well!
